I have bought my first Marklin Loco, and it is an old model, but runs well.
It has a metal body, and is a 2 rail type compatible with my Fleischmann and Roco units. It came in it's original box,but I am anxious to get a copy of the directions/instructions for servicing it.
It has traction tyres on the driving bogie, and they may need replacing now that it is "Mainline Service " again.
I get great pleasure watching it haul my German rolling stock,as I appreciate it's quality heritage.
Thanks for the welcome, good modelling .Smile

What's the number on the box? The 3021 is a normal "3-rail" loco with a centre rail ski current pickup...

Is there any running number on the side, or is it V200006? I am just curious if this is a model converted to DC an original DC model (eg HAMO) or such...

Thanks steventrain and Juhan. The Loco has a number on the front, back and both sides,V200006.
The number on the box is 3021 with picture of Loco and Made in Western Germany .On close inspection the word Marklin is on the left hand side in front of the hand door hand rails. Also the model number 3021 is on the rear of the door hand rails. Numbers 1 and 2 appear on the doors front and rear, this is repeated in reverse on the other side.Underneath both bogies is stamped "made in Germany West".
Being made of metal these numbers and "DEUTCHE BUNDESBAHN"is stamped upraised, never to come off.
Hope this helps in your identification of this "old timer".

It is a model of one of my favorite diesels. The V200. So you have operated it on a DC layout? From all accounts, Maerklin numbered their DC (HAMO) types in the 8000's but you know what you have of course. Sometimes there is a 3021 manual for sale on Ebay. If you don't have any luck, I think I have one I can scan and email you but I need a couple of days to get to it, unfortunately. Email or PM me so I can get your email addy and I'll get something going soon enough.

3021 is the 3 Rail AC Märklin version of the V200. If yours is a 2 rail DC version, then it has been converted at some stage.

BTW, Welcome to the forum, Owen.

The 3021 was not in Hamo range.

I have 4 pages of hamo catalogue.

according to my kolls marklin produced a hamo version of the 3021, numbered 3921 from 1959 to 1970. The "deutsche bundesbahn" sign on the side was discontinued after 1962.

Thanks everyone,I think Bigdaddynz is probably correct,I no very little about Marklin ,but will learn quickly.
I hope to meet my friend that I bought the Loco from in a few weeks, and will ask the question, was it modified to DC 2 Rail ?.He is a genuine guy and is a long time American Outline modeller. From an investment point of view, would I assume that a modified 3 to 2 rail model would be less valuable the original ?
Is "Hamo" the name for the 2 rail Marklin series ? In any case I would not have bought a 3 rail model with my set up.

I don't have a koll, but I'm sure that from 1959 the 3921 was the kit version (in AC!) Is it possible that the Hamo version (if this existed) was 3921 too? Wasn't it 3821 perhaps?

3921 is for sure the kit version of the v200, which existed in different liveries, starting with the version with two frontlamps. All HAMO DC locos had a 83 prefix on their catalognumbers. The product sheet published by steventrain here seems to be of the late 70's, i am not sure if there hasn't been a V200 HAMO version in the 60's. If your model is an original HAMO one, it is for sure more worth than a normal V200 because the HAMO models had far lower production than the normal märklin models. but the most important thing is : have fun with your V200 !!

Hi,

I thought that in those years HAMO versions had product codes starting with "8"?

In any case HAMO/regular difference is only that the wheels are isolated, have different pick-up shoes, and HAMO have permanent magnet. That's all. If yours came in a 3021 box that is good because in those years M* used to put HAMO strip on regular boxes for HAMO products which ruins the original artwork on the box to a degree.

Nonetheless you have purchased a great item. Did you know that V200 models are one of the most sturdy models ever produced? In many homes they are also used as a hammer and this not a joke! biggrin

Cem.

just had a look into my KOLL of 2008, the only HAMO V200 is catalognummber 8381 based on 3382 AC versions from 1992 (MHI loco). Most DC HAMO locos have the 83 prefix on their catalognumber but there are different ones especially from the 90's on. There have been a limited number of HAMO locos for AC in the mid of the 60's, some of them nowadays very rare collector items. so your V200 must have been converted from a AC version.

I created a lively discussion on this old Marklin 3021. I saw my Queensland Marklin Dealer today and after inspecting this loco he considered it to be a converted 3rail Marklin to a 2rail DC unit. Certain marks under the driving bogie certified this. He thought the tyres were reasonable and if it drove a bit better from motor bogie at the rear than other way around, then it neede the brushes etc. cleaned. He has always given me good after sales service and advice since a modest purchase some years ago.
