Hello everyone.

I cannot get over how much knowledge is circulating on this forum. It is amazing.

My question is in regards to installing a smoke unit into a small locomotive. I received a starter set in my youth and would like to share this hobby with my kids. A smoke unit would be nice but I am unsure how to do this, which one to buy and where to buy it. (Or even if it is possible.)The loco is from a starter set I believe it is the ol' 089 stand by. I also have a small KVLM tank style loco which I would like to do this as well.

Some of you have mentioned your local dealer. All the local dealers I have called from the Marklin web site can order most things and send things our for repairs. I live just outside Detroit, Michigan. Any Ideas?

Hello, David,

so far I installed smoke units only in locomotives that were prepared for them.

I presume your ol' 89 is a #3000 loco. You'd have to drill a hole for the smoke unit, move the light bulb to make room for the smoke unit, and solder two wires to power the smoke unit.
I'm confident that I could install a decoder in a #3000 - but I daren't fit a smoke unit in a #3000.

The KLVM has no light bulb, so it could be easier with her. But it still needs a drill. I'm not sure if the smoke stack is wide enough for a standard smoke unit.
I wouldn't try that either ...

I'm not skilled enough - but maybe you are?!?!?

The easy way: buy a big steamer that is prepared for a smoke unit.

I agree with Thomas: if the loco is not predisposed for smoke it's a bit of work to install it. Do you have a digital set?

Best suggestion: get yourself a nice Marklin System set with CS and a new mfx digital locomotive with sound and smoke! That will only set you back several 100 $ but your kids will be permanently hooked-up! wink

Hello dlarson,

I put a smoke generator in a plastic body loc using various web sites for examples. I chickened out and removed it because the body got pretty hot.

Some comparison measurements from memory: my metal body loc the outside chimney was warm to touch (about 90 deg farenheit), and the inside chimney was around 170 deg. farenheit (using cheap infrared thermometer). The plastic body got pretty close to 170 on the outside (where metal loc was 90). I thought about buying a broken loc to determine melting point, but who knows if the plastic formula changes over the years or with different sub-contractors.

Anyway it worked for a few days until I chickened out.

I drilled and filed my chimney as much as I dared and sanded the smoke insulation down until it fit, similar to X-train web site's BR86 which shows step by step. Don't have link now.

Thank you all for your input and welcome greetings.

The starter set I mentioned includes a variety of M track. I thought I would stick with what I know for now. The analog system works for me simply for those reasons. I have read alot on this site about the advantages and disadvantages of m track but it is I simply wanted a familiar place to start. I was thinking I would ease into the digital stuff. Besides, some of you have mentioned the first layout would be replaced after a while due to a beginners lack of experience. I fall into this catagory.

I have visited this web site often and soon realized I could learn alot.
