Hi all,

I wonder what is the general policy of Märklin on products with zinkpest?

I have a 36805 Köf that is showing signs of zinkpest. Actually, the thin beam over the drivers cab (right under the roof) just got broken. There is also evidence of zinkpest at the back of the loco; the paint seems to get uneven like there is some air trapped between the paint and the metal surface.

For it is an old model and a gift from a friend, I don't have proof of purchase. Should I return it to Märklin, or should I just accept the fact and get ready to part with it?

Cem, I know that the Köf is one of the models that Marklin has had trouble with zincpest, but as to their replacement policy, I'm not too sure. I know some forum members have had their Köf's replaced under warranty. Maybe you should email the Marklin service department.

I guess that's what I'll do. Since 36805 is very well known for developing zinkpest issues I thought maybe M* have a different policy on replacements regarding this particular model.

As a matter of goodwill and to ensure they keep you as a customer then they should replace your loco. The again maybe they know like all of us here we will keep buying their products so they will not even answer your mail.
Let us know how it goes.

Is there any reason to replace whole loco? Can a new 'body' be purchased? At least that would reduce the financial damage if they don't help.

My seetal crocodile had a similar problem with the frame. They billed me for labor (it was out of warranty and I went through the factory instead of Marklin USA which may have been a bit more amicable to my situation) but they provided the part free of charge. not over the top customer service but certainly fair considering it was past warranty.

Hi,

Thanks for your replies.

I would have thought that since zinkpest is caused by defective raw material replacing those should not be considered as part of the guarantee agreement.

Replacing the body may certainly be an option ... thanks for the idea Chris.

Well, I'll mail them on Monday and let's see what happens.

John, may I ask how much they billed for the labor cost?

Was the amount specified by actual work time or just as a "standard service fee"?

I think it's fair with a free defect part replacement, but also fair to bill since it was out of warranty.

Hi all,

I just have received an e-mail for my inquiry on the subject; just like I thought -and just like it should be- Märklin says they will replace the loco with a new one.

One more case is resolved; well done mother M* ThumpUp

Just realized that I have a 36805 as well and also a 36810. I will check them later today for the issue.

Well done, Cem! That was a good move by Marklin.

Cheers,

Make sure you do that Mario. I hope your 36805 is zinkpest-free.

Thanks Ranjit, it is very relieving to see M* acting the way I hoped they would; I wasn't mistaken to invest in M* after all Smile
