I have been looking at some of my older locomotives and decided to replace some of the traction tires that are worn out. I replaced the tires on my V60 #3065 with no problem. When I tried to do my E18 #3024 I found that the new tires don't sit well in the groove. They almost seem too wide and so they don't go flat instead they are high on one side. I have tried to convince them they belong in the groove but they are not co-operating.
Is this a common problem or did I just do a bad job of fitting the tires on? Is the groove width fairly standard over the years?

Traction tires come in different sizes, so it's worth checking you have the right one. And yes, brand new tires seem to protrude from the grooves on occasion (although the shouldn't be higher on one side than on the other). Sometimes running the loco on slow speed whilst pushing down on it with a bit of force helps the tires to "settle in" - give it a try. |

I replaced all the traction tires on my old locos, since most were rock hard. I took a small screwdriver and went over the tires all the way round to help them seat, that seemed to do the trick.
Also my experience is that you need to have the right size tires, smaller ones will stretch a bit but if they are too big, forget it. I checked, looks like the 3024 uses 7153 tires, is that what you are using?

I made the mistake of thinking that the tires were the 7152. I double checked last night and indeed found the right size is 7153. They fit great. I should have checked more closely before I put them on. The 7152 are bigger and I thought they would be the right ones but they seem to be just a little bit wider. I am going to make a cheat sheet with replacement parts for all my locomotives. Thanks for the replies.  Cheers... Darren

That's quite an issue really, which of the 715x tires are the right ones? On some loks the 7153 is really a tight stretch fit while 7152 is just that little bit too loose... Have made the same observation that one looks to fit but is not the right one as Darren has... Maybe we should make an x-ref table for it? |

hi, The Service Manual 0733 if you can get hold of it off ebay lists all the traction tires off the older locos. Also lists bulbs and sliders etc.

Geoff, as I see it - the newer loks are the ones with some hesitations of which tyre to use... It was easier in the older days when you had 3-4 sizes of wheels...
I think the 0733 is downloadable from the US marklin.com site too, at the "technical center" or whatever it is called nowadays... |

Hi Juhan, Yes, you are right,the service manual is on the USA marklin site. However each page is a seperate jpeg file which makes downloading a bit of an effort. The spare parts list of the manual is section 10.
