Will be in Amsterdam next weekend with my daughter who is a student at the University of Cologne.

Any tips on what to see in terms of Marklin, model railroading and real railroading?

Will be coming from Cologne then after Amsterdam going to Stuttgart and onto Marklin.

Wherever I go in the digital world or in person, I meet people from the Netherlands; they seems to be everywhere! It makes me wonder if there are any people left in their home country that are not traveling someplace or living outside of Holland.

If you are willing to spent some time:

Take the train from Amsterdam Central station to Rotterdam Central station and visit this: http://www.railzminiworld.com/ENGindex.htm

The traveling by train will cost you about 1:03 to 1:10 hours and 25 euro (2nd class) and 42 euro (1st class).

Railz miniworld is located almost directly at the entrance of Rotterdam Central Station.

It really is quite an unique experience. I like it a lot.

Welcome to the Netherlands.

When you come to Amsterdam (the Netherlands) you are in the neighbourhood of the Märklin Store Amsterdam http://www.marklinstore-amsterdam.nl/pageID_8851931.html
My son and I, we made the new website for this Store in the last few days. Please have a look at it and have a visit to this special store.
On the website you can see how to go there by train. From the airport Schiphol to the railway-station Amsterdam Zuid / World Trade Center, it will take only 10 minutes.

You can also visit the city of Utrecht in the middle of the Netherlands: Railway museum "Spoorwegmusem" (look on google)or you can go to the city of The Hague in the west of the Netherlands (Den Haag) and visit the mini world of Madurodam (google). From Amsterdam to Utrecht and also to the Hague (Den Haag) it will take about half an hour.

Evil R mentioned Railz in Rotterdam and I can agree: It is worth it. The Märklin Store Amsterdam has tickets for Railz for rebate. biggrin Enjoy yourself and your daughter. [:p]

Hi Larry,
Indeed impossible to escape meeting Dutch people, remember we sailed the seven seas already a long time ago,we founded New York,we founded Cape Town (Kaapstad),we were the first from Europe in Tasmania (founded by our seafarer Abel Tasman),Tasman also founded Arnhem land north of Brisbane,Tasman explored New Zealand before Cook did,etc.,etc.,etc.
Sorry, but with such a track record it is hard to be modest!
About your trip to Amsterdam:would say just walking around over the various platforms and watching the large number of trains arriving and departing can be great fun.
We have one of the most dense networks in the world, stations in Holland look like those on a table top M layout, trains going in and out all the time.
Intercities nowadays depart about every 15 minutes or so.
Also, during daytime you can spot express freight trains, that is:container unit trains, oil tank cars, iron ore unit trains etc.
The Thalys express train to Brussels can also be spotted every hour.
In short:plenty to see.
You could also try a local train for a short ride to Haarlem (Harlem in NY is named after it).
Haarlem is a rather busy station too,it was the first station of the national network in 1839.
You still find beautiful remains of that era at Haarlem, like the old fashioned waiting rooms and the ceramic tile paintings in the walls.
By the way, when spending time at any station:keep an eye on your belongings, including money, there are lots of busy creatures active, trying to score the quick dollar of the day,and that includes people from countries like Roemenia etc,be aware at all times!
And yes,you will find that some Dutchmen stayed at home, especially the intercity trains can be very crowded at times, with hardly any seat vacant.
Have more than you show, speak less than you know (Shakespeare).

See by post about the Marklin shop near Zuid Station is really great.

If it runs at weekends the old tram museum line is good.

Public Transport is really great.

Just watching trains to all over Europe going through Central Station is worth a bit of time.

Have to say I loved the place.

If you have some more money to spend, you can also take the Fyra between Amsterdam and Rotterdam. It's our first high-speed train in The Netherlands. Unfortunately it only goes once very hour.
You are never too late to become a Märklin fan.
