Hi,

Recently I received a BR141 in nice condition but with rusty handrails. This is, as far as I know, a quite common issue with older models.

Have you replaced these "rusty" handrails? How do you source them?

Thanks.

Old Bass strings.
I have removed handrails from stanchions, sanded them to remove rust, and clear sprayed them on other makes to great success.

Brakepad, I have cleaned surface rust off with diluted rubbing compound and my dremelwith the polishing pads. TOC, the clear sealer is a good idea. Thanks for the tip...

Hi,

Like TOC said but I use guitar strings (instead of bass); plain ones (G, D or E). Go for thickest ones.

Cem.

Well, I tried paper clips but wire was too wide and I could not fit it into the handrail holes in the loco body.

But yesterday I went to a music store. I followed Cem's advice and the result is just perfect:

And after:

I spent 1,10€. I have handrails for a LOT of locos.

Many thanks! Good advice!

I was just about to endorse Cem's advice, which I believe I introduced in the forum many years ago...
And it seems you have also found the glory of a good guitar string... Looks very good indeed... Cool

I have even repaired pantographs with a G-string (D'Addario 0.15) and it looks just great.

Guitar strings are very good mrr model material, you can use the thicker wound ones in the set to model fire hoses and such too...

And as a special treat - A young Webmaster playing his Gibson Les Paul DeLuxe in the late 70:s.... biggrin

if you have money to burn, you might consider a tool called the "grab handler" by Mission Models. I know I didn't pay much for mine (on ebay some time ago), but now they sell for about $80 US.

they're made with mostly armor modelers in mind, but would work equally well for trains.

Another picture from my '59-'60(I think) 3005 BR23, with replaced handrails (the guitar string is OK also for curved handrails):

No worries, David... Only "backup vocals", except for "Bad Moon Rising" which was slaughtered vocally by myself back then in the band...
