There was a time when locos with MFX decoders could not be read using the LokProgrammer. Thankfully these are over and I have been able to read and modify setting on MFX decoder even with other devices including the ECOS.

However, there is one new loco that the LokProgrammer (v2.7.5) cannot read and it is the new rail bus 39984. Interestingly the ECOS can read it but it take absolutely forever and then only has limited capabilities compared with LokProgrammer.

Any thought as to why?

PS: Probelem arose when trying set the secondary address as an alternative to play sounds via F5 to F8 which don't seem to work

The 39984 is probably the same as my 39980. I have to remove the decoder from the unit and program it directly with the Lok programmer. I believe that in the lok there is some auxiliary circuitry that overloads the lok programmer causing it to not function. I have several lok that have this problem, so I bought the interface module for the lok programmer that has the 21 pin socket plus connections for other types of decoders on it.

Hello,

normally loco's with SDS cannot be read directly because the driver circuit of the motor is disturbing the signal. You have to take decoder out.

kind regards

Stephan

That explains some of the problems I have been having.. What a #$%@^#& pain.. What is the interface module Ron? Does it have a part number?

If Ron means the 51900 Profi-Prüfstand, I've got one you can borrow.
It has 6, 8, and 21-pin connectors, a terminal block for non-socket decoders, some funtion LED's, a test motor and a speaker.

A handy bit of kit.
Cheers,
Damon

Thanks Damon.. I don't need it at the moment, but I am still puzzled as to how the eCOS can read and write to these decoders, but you need to remove them for the Lokprogrammer... Seems nuts!

Adrian,
This is Märklin obstructing an easier way of writing & reading their mfx decoders.
Zimo had troubles with their decoders when used in conjunction with the later Märklin PCB's, they blew up.
they've corrected it now.

Ok thanks. I will try the decoder in another loco without SDS as I don't have the decoder tester (yet). It is still puzzling why one ESU product will read it and another ESU product will not.

The ESU product that uses the documented interface does work.

I don'[t understand...doesn't the ESU LokProgrammer use the documented interface? It works perfectly when the decoder is removed form the lok
