Better be safe than sorry, so before I brake something I would like to ask you this: how do I get access to the inside light strips of the carriages? Also the passengers are "loose" in their seats.

I tried to remove the black "corridor" things at the ends hoping the body would come off like other types of carriages, but that was a no-go.

Can't really see which part will come off - the roof only or the body assembly from the under carriage.

I think the design of the coaches goes back to the 80s/90s or so. There may be two small screws on the underside of the coach, one on each end near the coupler. Remove the screws, and the black frame should come off the main body.

Thanks, but there are no screws.

The carriages are very nicely build - no "openings", but by very close examination I found that the doors are one whole piece with both the main body and the under carriage, so the latter two can't be separated from each other. That leaves the roof, but it is so snug fit that you can't even get a nail in between. I hope that the parts are not glued together.
Any ideas? Thanks.

edited: photo added for clarification.

Regrettable the close-up photo could be better but the yellow and black sections of the door are one piece, cannot be separated.

Benny,
See the end Rubber, remove these on both ends.
But be careful when removing them.
they have 3 slugs = 2 in the middle (both sides) and 1 on the bottomwhich holds the housing the floor together.

The floor and the housing will seperate.

Hi John.

I had the "End Rubbers" removed (that was what I meant with the "corridor" things first mentioned - not knowing the proper name for them biggrin)
Still with those removed the black frame is firmly attached to the yellow part of the body. Pressing on either do not make the slightest opening to the opposite part. It does seem that the black frame and the yellow body are glued together at least from door to door.

I now think it must be the roof that should come off. How else would one get access to the light strip.

Can anybody confirm thisconfused

Benny,
remove the corridors, turn your coach upside down, lift up the buffers carefully away from the housing.
go along the edges with your fingernail and seperate the floor from the housing.
You will find the coach housing has little inserts along the side wich have to be opened up.
The roof and the housing is one piece.
its the side that seperates.

Thanks John, you are probably right, that it will come apart this way. I had another look at it and found that doing this would probably not give me access to the light strip and the no-more-glued-to-their-seats passengers.

Finally I decided to have a go with the roof - pressing my fingernail in the no-space between the roof and the body and they did just make a tiny opening, then sliding along the roof it clicked open with a scaring loud noise one tap at the time without breaking (4 on each side).

The wires to the light strip are just clamped into the copper bars by spring action:

Beeny,
Your Airport express carriages are different to mine.
I'll show you some pictures of mine soon.
Which set are yours from ? BR 111 or BR 103

John

These belong to the set 2868 with the BR 103.
I also have a set 2867 with the BR 111.
I looked closer on the carriages of the BR 111 set. You are quite right about the difference between the two sets (besides the locos biggrin).
The most destinctive differences are:
The BR 103 set has flat end rubbers and air outlets on the roof above the doors and some passengers.
The BR 111 set has round end rubbers and no outlets or passengers.
Also the windows inserts differ slightly.

These are the same as the 4224/4225 coaches, which are the only 42xx series where the roof lifts off rather than the whole body and roof as one. A lot of Fleischmann models are assembled in the same way.

All coaches are diffcult to get into for lighting etc. A couple of screws from the chassis to roof would be much better. A bit like Roco locos where you have to pull the body apart to remove it. This is a cheap way of doing things and just uses the fact that plastic is bendable.

It has its good & bad points.
Although roco is sometimes hard to open and if you reverse the housing from the chassis they wont fit together.
Because I do my own interior lights (led's) and electrical couplings, there is a lot to think about it, to get it all properly together again.
Some of Märklin carriages as mentioned before (2 screws)or removing the end rubber corridor enables you to seperate the carriage.

The 3 Airport coaches are different in design.
2 of them, the roof is removable (open coach) and one which I've opened the roof is fixed. (compartment).
I did'nt know this until you've mentioned it.
I thought they may had two different releases.

Here are some photos from my Set 2868 with BR 103:

this is an open coach
with 4 seperated parts.
