Hi all, For about 4 years ago I bought a big lot of vintage Märklin from the beginning of the 50's on a market here in Denmark. It contained among other things the two passenger wagons for the big rail car ST 800 in blue. Unfortunately the motor car was missing[V], which, in my opinion, is the most important part. After a search of almost three years, I have given up finding only the motor car on eBay, so I have decided to build it myself of original parts and replica parts. Some days ago I won an auction including some very old parts for the motor car, the power boogies and some parts for the motor, so now I am a very little step closer to have the motor car  . I am thinking of buying the frame and the body as replica parts from ritter in Germany, because the chances are almost equal to zero that an original body for the motor car in blue shows up on eBay. I think I am going to make a first or second version. If anybody could provide me with some pictures of the inside of the motor car I would be very grateful. I need to know how all the wires are connected inside of it and also what colors they are. I will keep you posted when get more parts and start to assemble it. Very kind regards, Thor

Hi Thor, I can promise you internal ST 800 pics of the engine by the end of the weekend. I have a 2nd version in Red and have taken it apart many times. It is an absolute masterpiece, you will have a great time building this incredible engine. Keep your eye out for ddtrain on eBay, since I have frequently seen ST 800 parts being offered by her. Let us know if you are ever searching for a specific part. I am going to be rebuilding a CCS 800.1 next week with many missing parts, so I will be going on a similar hunt! Hi William, Thank you very much, I can't wait. I'm actually going to buy some parts from ddtrain when I have received my other parts. She got the brush plate holder for the motor and the contact plate for the front lights and some other things I need. As it looks right now ritter in Germany has all the parts I need combined with the things ddtrain on eBay has, so there won't be any problems getting the right parts, just the matter of how much money you are willing to spend. Good luck with your CCS 800. I'm also looking out for a beaten up CCS 800 made between 1947 and 1950. Can you post pictures of it when it arrives? That would be very nice  Kind regards, Thor

I'll be sure to post pics of the CCS 800, I'll make a separate thread like you have done.
Remember, the ST 800 blue is a very rare locomotive. A mint example without original box runs around $3,000. Spending money on original parts is a good investment, but try to limit your purchasing of the replicas.

Just a little question. How come that the green and blue ST 800's are more rare than the one in red? They costed the same when they originally were sold. And then, which one is the most rare, the blue or the green, when we exclude the first version of the green with the "Maigrüne" color?

You may want to contact Franz Nowack (franz.nowack @ t-online.de) in Germany. He is a member of our IG TRIX Express Club and has many parts available for both TRIX and Maerklin, especially the older models from the 1930's, 1940's and 1950's era locomotives.
He does accept payment for parts via PayPal.

I think the green is the rarest, I have seen it frequently sell for more than the blue one. I am not sure what determines the rarity, but I would assume they produced less of the non-red version. Also, there are less versions of the green version and fewer production years. Again, its hard to tell which version is rare because you hardly find two comparable locomotives of different colors.

Bayer, I agree with Bill that it is best to limit the number of reproduction parts, but there are also a number of ST 800's out there, with a new body shell and parts on the lead motor car. If you look at ebay, there are too many, IMHO, nearly perfect examples of ST 800's, showing little or no play wear. I suspect that some of these have been rebuilt, because we know that zinkpest was a problem on some of the early models. My advice is to restore it and get it running and then post us some pictures so that we all can enjoy!!! |

Thank you all for your replies. Maurice, I have just emailed Franz and I can't wait for his reply. Thom, my intension is to get it running and keep it forever, not sell it. I promise to post pictures of the final result. I can truly understand you and William when we talk about limiting the number of replica parts, but I just think it will be almost impossible to find an original body in blue. Now I have bought all the parts from ddtrain I needed, so soon I can start assembling the motor and the power boogies  . I'll keep you updated when they arrive. I've found out that ritter has all the parts I need as original parts except for the frame, the body and the two universal joints which connects the motor to the power boogies. Regards, Thor

Sorry for the delay, Thor. I tried to get the body off of my ST 800, but it seems to be a bit stuck and I didn't want to force it. Is there only one screw that holds the body on? I could only see one, but maybe someone knows of another. I can't remember from the last time I took it apart.

Hi William, As far as I know there is only one screw. The frame for the rear wagon is the same for the motor wagon. In the front of the wagon between the front lights there is a little dot, which holds the body in place. Maybe the body is stuck there? A pic of the dot (don't know how to express this in another way):  Just take your time to take it apart. Regards, Thor

Franz didn't have any parts for the ST-family, but thank you very much Maurice for recommending him. If I'm going to need parts for the Märklin 700 and the early 800 locos I would definitely contact him.

Some days ago I received my first package with the power boogies and some motor parts. So far I have assembled one power boogie. The other one is a little bit tricky, because I am missing to brass bearings for the wheels and one of the boogies suffers seriously from zinc pest, but is usable. I think I am soon going to order the last parts I need from ritter except for the body and frame. In a few days my second package will arrive with some more motor parts and the contact plate for the rear lights.
