Some weeks ago I bought a brand new loc # 37122 (a ACTS (former NS) 1251 in beautiful dark blue livery).
Since the loc was very noisy, I opened it. As far as I can see, there was absolutely no oil in the engine (motor bearings, axles). However the manual states (as usual) that lubrication is only necessary after 40 hrs of operation.
After I gave the loc some tiny drops of oil, the noise is a lot less.
Has anyone else had the same experience with a loc without oil?

Maybe forget the oil before left factory. |

Not to little well way to much grease in a delta V100.
But that was more then 10 years ago.

The locomotive in my 29750 set was completely dry of oil as well. |

I seem to remember an article in the Insider Magazine just recently. Someone had written in and said that they thought that the models would come fully lubricated. The answer was explained as follows:
'All locomotives leave the factory with a minimum of lubricant. This is to avoid leakage in the presentation box, thereby spoiling the appearance. A light oiling is recommended before use.' I shall try and look out said article.

A fellow collector has told me that all Marklin locomotives leave the factory with no grease on the cogs or engine. Is it correct that I have to lubricate the cogs and engine myself?
Locomotives do not leave the factory with no lubrication, but the lubrication is minimal and designed to protect damage from oil leaking onto the caps. We recommend a light oiling before running the locomotives.

<font face="Verdana]The user guides that came with my V80 and Ludmilla (both Hobby Series locos) state that I should lubricate them after 40 hrs of use (neither one of them has done 40 hrs yet). They're not noisy, they run quite well.</font id="Verdana]

They are lightly lubricated in the factory, but if they stay on the shelves for a while the oil will dry up.
Also, the 40 hour period recommended is for a loco which sees continuous use. If you keep it stopped for 6 months you will need to lubricate it. |

I bought many locos that were brand new but were in the shop for many years. I had to lubricate all of them!

Thanks!  So M* had better change it's user manuals. It will also depend on the type of motor, I suppose. This one was a 5* engine and that definitely needs some lubrication. As far as grease is concerned, I have not noticed any engine/drive train which needs it and did not have it from new. Best regards, Henk. |

The important factor seems to be how long the locomotive has been sitting on the shelf at the dealer , or in your closet.
The problem is the same.

37122 is a rather new product so it cannot have been sitting on a shelf for a real long time.
But in general it is true ofcourse that when a loco has been sitting for years, it needs lubrication (maybe cleaning the old oil out first).
