Hello there,

I am new to this forum so if I make any mistakes please forgive me!

I obtained a model of the Big Boy (37990) from a German friend who is a member of the Maerklin Insider Club back around 2001. The model is perfect in all respects but due to personal illness, now lacks all the detailing parts which are described in a review for the American publication “Model Railroading” (March 2002) for addition to a static model. This review briefly describes the “separate parts bags” containing the accessories which can be added to the model - including two figures and many other items – it is at the start of the second page of this review.

Any help/contacts to obtain these “parts bags” will be more than welcome.

Many thanks,

Edmund

Welcome to the forum Edmund.

I'm not sure if the bag of detailing parts is available as a spare part, but have a look here to see if you can see the parts you need. Most of them seem to be in stock at Marklin, so you should be able to order them via your favourite Marklin dealer.

Many thanks. The exploded diagram does not include the extra bagged components. I now live in the UK and am stuck to find a Maerklin dealer. Can anyone recommend one please?

PS I used to live in Atlanta GA so I could ask there. Any suggested dealers there please?

Thank you,

Edmund

You're probably better off going to the larger German dealers.

Try http://www.lokshop.de/e_default.htm or http://www.modelleisenbahn.com/index_e.php

Edmund,
Welcome to the forum. I am from Atlanta GA. There are a few M* dealers here but I would'nt waste my time trying to get the parts from them. Like others suggested, the large German dealers would be your best bet.

Hello again!

I have now managed to order from Maerklin some of the "added parts" which come with their Big Boy. However I am puzzled about an article in the March 2002 edition of Model Railroading which describes, amongst other things, "Separate bags contain ... pilot air hoses, engine-tender connection hoses, and a small round cover to hide the turret screw". Some of these are added for static display.

Can any Big Boy owners clarify this please? Maerklin only supply bags containing two engine men and alternatives for the front pilot coupling. Are these other "bits" for the US only.

Thanks again,

Edmund

Both my Big Boys are currently packed away, awaiting a layout build (37990 and 37991).
From memory the detail bag does include a spare round cover which covers the main body fixing screw, and I think it also included parts to close the front fairings/cattle plough if you choose to remove the front coupling. not sure on this though as it has been a while since I had them out.

Will check soon as I need to see them again!

Regards
Ashley

Here are the following (checking the 37990, but it´s the same bag that came with all my Big Boys):

2 figures
1 small spare round cover for the 2nd screw for the chassis.
1 cover, closed
1 cover, open
1 coupling mock-up
1 brake pipe
1 coupling hook

Many thanks! What is the brake pipe please and where does this go? Oh and the coupling mock up is on the pilot I presume.

Thanks,

Edmund

No problems Edmund. I have no idea about the brake pipe. I´d also like to know where to use it. I don´t remember it stated in the manual for 37991 or the 37993 either.

Yup. You use the open cover together with the coupling mock-up. That´s how I display mine. Märklin also states you can use Kadee #19.

Many thanks to you all. I've fathomed what is required. I now need to get the attachments which can be selected for the front pilot.

As David mentioned, these are common to all the Maerklin Big Boys and are:

1 cover, closed
1 cover, open
1 coupling mock-up
1 brake pipe
1 coupling hook

Unfortunately I cannot easily get these from Maerklin as spares - these parts do not have numbers to quote - unlike the figures which I have ordered. Can anyone advise me how I can get them - the attachment I really need is the first one, the "cover, closed" for displaying my model.

Thanks for your patience.

Edmund

Oops! I see from "Model Railroading" that the Trix/Maerklin Big Boy has "engine-tender connection hoses" which can be added to the model for static display.

Have any Big Boy owners seen these and if so what do the look like please?

If the is a Maerklin spares number (or numbers) this would be helpful.

Many thanks!

Edmund.

I think those engine-tender connection hose is the item I´ve listed as "brake pipe". There´s no picture in the manual how to use it though, but it´s mentioned to use the brake pipe for static display... I´ve just quoted what´s in the manual. The brake pipe looks like 2 hoses connected with 2 plates.

As I have 3 Big Boy I know very well what´s in the bags (but not all of their uses). It´s the same contents in 37990, 37992, 37993.

David, many thanks. I now have a picture of a Trix Big Boy with the "brake pipe" fitted. It is attached to the front pilot with the closed cover. This is shown in "Model Railroading" March 2002 - which can be found as a "pdf folder" on Google. If you want a copy email me please.

Best regards,

Edmund
