I have been considering a project to build my own boosters. I have Rutger's book with a booster project in it, but he fails to identify the values of the diodes in the circuit. Has anyone built this or does anyone have a booster schematic I could use? |

Thanks, David. I have looked there, but his requires a 24v tranny. I want to stay with standard transformers. |

Hi Ron, Why build one when you can buy a Delta Control for about US$ 19.00. I have about 10 of these Martin |

Thanks, David.
Martin..I have a number of 6604's. I have been slowly selling them off on ebay. I prefer using a real booster controlled through the booster bus. I have been using LDT devices, but with my planned expansion, I was thinking of doing some homebrew. |

Yes I have built this unit and it does work very well. You are right that the information is not listed in the parts list on page 95.
If you were to look at page 35 then you will see that the diodes are 1N4148 for all of them except for the following
D1 Red LED D2 1N5401 D3 1N5401 D4 1N4003

Finally got around to finishing one. Works great, thanks to the help here. I can now build a booster for under 30 bucks! Along with my homemade s88's now, it makes my expansion tat much less expensive. |

Glad to hear that. Some times the original designs are worth hanging on to. MXF well for some I think it will take some time till we warm up to it.

I have no need for mfx so it is not an issue. My computer keeps track of the details, I select trains to run by name. |

I agree with you Ron, for me, mfx is redundancy. I use a blue delta controler for a booster. There can't be a whole lot going on in there. Take one apart, then visit Radio shack to duplicate it?

As I said above, I used to use 6604's, but I would rather use the booster bus. Here is my new booster. The board will get a few changes in the next order, but it is basically finalized:

Nice redesign of the circuit. With the cost so low to build, there is definetly no need to use the build in booster of the control unit. Its always easier the replace or repair a home made booster than to have to send out a control unit should something go wrong.
I also do not use MFX and basically have the newer controllers as a collection more than anything, I still use the 6021 unit for it's simplicity and robustness.

Maxi, how about the values for D5 - D13?

Oops, sorry missed that bit! Thanks Ron. As you can tell I got the books out of our library to have a look. Some interesting projects in them. Did you have your own circuit boards made up, Ron?

David: Yes. I use ExpressPCB. Great service and top quality boards. |

And they seem to ship worldwide too! Ron, did you re-design the PCB for the booster with their software?

Yes. It is really easy to use. The "mini board" service (3 double sided boards with plated through holes) for USD51 is really a value. You don't get silkscreening and solder mask with that price, but it is great for prototyping.
