Hi everybody,
I had a quick question. Right when they first came out I bought one of the HAG "new generation" Ae 4/7s. The locomotive is great and I love it, however there is one thing that bothers me about it- the polished/bright wheels.

My question is do later variants of this locomotive have blackened flanges/wheels? If so I may sell mine to upgrade.

Another question- have any of you actually used "blacken it" to dye wheelsets on your rolling stock. I know its been around forever but I'm yet to meet someone who has actually used it. I'm not about to use my $500 locomotive as a test dummy!

Thanks in advance!

You may want to contact Stefan Unholz (http://homepage.hispeed.ch/unholz/english.html) as he is an expert on HAG. I believe he is a member of this forum and should be able to answer your question.

The older HAG locomotives that I have do not have black wheel flanges and the silver is not that bright. The wheels to me do not detract from the excellent quality and running characteristics of these locomotives.

Ummm... - perhaps we should first clarify which part of the wheels is bothering you:

All "new generation" HAG Ae 4/7s I have seen have blackened spokes/sides of the wheels (I mean the surfaces which you see when you view the model sideways).

However, the actual wheel surfaces (the parts which have contact with the rail) and also the flanges are deliberately polished/shiny to ensure the best possible current/signal contact especially in DC and/or digital operation. For a certain time before, HAG actually did dye the wheelsets (these wheelsets show a brownish overall appearance), but this lead to numerous protests especially from DC runners who reported that such surfaces impaired operation. Thus, I would be wary about using a product such as "blacken it" on your wheelsets - you might meet with conductivity problems for instance over turnouts, etc.

Hmmm...
Interested...!
If you are just only take care of cleaning not only tracks, but also with wheels you will have good contact.
So blackening wheels or not,it doesn´t matter...!
Because,i have blackening wheels and can´t see any problems with them.

Thanks Stefan! That answers my question. I may have a flirt with blacken it and see what i can do. Everyone else darkens this contact patch on high end models so I don't forsee a major problem (providing a test with a less expensive locomotive like a marklin 3000 works!)

A question:
Is it possible to change wheels at HAG locomotiv to blackening wheels from an factory who sells those kind of wheels...?
I know myself that Marklin/Trix has blackening wheels too, which you can change to a new wheel when the old one is dirty or damage.
