I just took delivery on Marklin item #30071.

You hard core collectors will recognize this item as the Replica Krokodil from the Hans Peter Porsche Museum in Anger, Germany, in a special green color.

Here is my dilemma, and one of you is sure to know the answer. Or at least give advice.
It came wrapped in plain brown paper. No description, no model number. Is this the way it comes from the Museum?
Should I open this and run it, or will I destroy any and all collector value by ruining the package? It does not look likely that I can open this without some damage. I like to run my stuff, and want to run this, but on the other hand, only 911 of these are being sold. So fairly rare.

Does this mean I can never see the model in person?Crying

My honest opinion.... run it. They are meant to be enjoyed. While these are expensive to collect the joy in seeing them in operation is greater. This of course is my opinion. I had finally picked up the Marklin 31860 set with the intention of running it, I did and had a huge smile running it. The memories are priceless and worth more than collector value.

Dave I am disappointed you did not buy two, one to run and one to keep as pristine.

IMHO if you open it the value will for some collectors be affected as it is no longer perfect, but then again part of the pleasure of our hobby is not to consider the end value of our investment but to enjoy the pleasure given running the items.

Its a personal choice but it I had one I would run it BigGrin BigGrin BigGrin BigGrin

Don't look back, your not heading that way.

Hi Dave,

Well, I haven’t got mine yet, but the HPP web site shows the model (18911) packaged in a special HPP version of the classic Märklin red/grey “diamond” box design. Is this hidden beneath the plain brown paper?

The green colour of the model is Porsche “Irish Green”, a classic colour from the history of Porsche cars, from the very early 356 to early 911s. The one-millionth 911 to be produced was in Irish Green, and the colour is still available to order today for Porsche cars via the “Paint to Sample” option. I’m sure it’s a colour dear to Peter Porsche’s heart!

Best wishes,

Nigel

PS Are you sure the plain brown paper is not just the protection applied by the perfectionists at HPP to all products ordered from them? I seem to remember getting stuff from them with that additional layer of wrapping.
Märklin collector since age 5.
H0 Collection from 1935 to today.

People spend a great deal of money collecting. Coins, Stamps, Barbie Dolls, Art etc.
These things are all static display. They don't do anything. This is why train wheels are round, not square.
Unlike our beloved Marklins; We only get to go around once.
Run it. And for heaven's sake, please post a video so we all can enjoy.
My two cents
Mikey

I love the smell of smoke fluid in the morning .

Here is a picture of the box containing the replika Krokodil. The box will also contain a numbered certificate. The picture is found on Hans-Peter Porsche Traumwerk's Internet site:
