Hello!

I currently use Train Controller and Marklin Circuit tracks (the one with the toggle) when profiling my locomotives. I was looking for an alternative to the Circuit Track. The issue is at the very low speeds while programming, the toggle piece seems to lift the pickup shoe just for an instance, and because the loc is going at a very slow speed, the locomotive stops.

Would using the reed contact device be a better, more reliable option?

Open to any and all ideas.

Thanks!

Hi Norbert,

What tracksystem are you using? If C-tracks you’re better off using the separation of the rails for occupancy.

Using 3-rail Märklin C-track system, Märklin CS-3, ESU ECoS, TrainController 11G, mostly Swedish and Danish engines and cars

Thanks Peder,

I'm using C track. I do use the contact track method for train occupancy around the layout. I'm looking more for a momentary indication used for speed profiling that I have set up a separate track run for this.

Dear Norbert -

I find optical detection works MUCH better than contact tracks. The only sensors of this type that I know of, however, you need to build. They also need a power source other than track power which has power and wiring implications.

To get you familiar with the idea, take a look at post #345 in this thread and #1909 in this thread.

Thanks everyone. I did look up the pictures by John at river6109 in your link for #1909, however my electronic experience is very limited, and very little to no experience in building these circuit boards. Are there any electronics OEM companies that sell these optical sensors already built for the model train customers? Thanking in advance.

Take a look at https://www.azatrax.com/...odel-train-detector.html . I haven’t used them myself but have been considering doing so on my M track extension to my c track layout.

Dear All -

Have a look at Geoff Bunza’s blog on this topic, link here. Good background on the topic of position sensing methods.

IIRC there is someone selling a device called an IRDot in the USA. I have no experience with it, but from what I have heard it should do what you want. A quick search comes up with this site that appears to be the maker of them.
