My 482 seems to be a bit noisy. I've tried lubricating it with silicone spray but that doesn't seem to solve the issue completely.

Any ideas or is this normal?

That sounds just like mine; I think it is normal. I have found that there is quite a lot of variance in the noise levels (even with 5-pole motors) from model to model. Locos with the new motors are much quieter.

Thanks, good to know. So if I get this new class 420 set will it have the new motor? It says "bell-shaped armature"?

Hello, hope all is well.

These locomotives (br 216,218, and similar types)seem to have the same issue.

They are noisy. Each bogie has a number of noisy gears. The sound seems to be amplified by the shell. It is just the way they are. Cleaning and lubricants may help. Seems the 5 pole motor is a bit softer and the newer coreless motors even better, but the noise may not be totally eliminated in some models. In the railbus, the noise is the endearing growl, some like.

You might have a quieter experience once your track is fastened to a layout platform. It’s possible this type of track may be a bit more noisy. The ballast is just hard plastic.

I have noticed increased noise transmission due to the platform too. Some materials seem to soften the noise. Old fashion cork is quiet, but what is under it makes a difference too.

In time you will get used to it. Keep it clean and lubricated. Fasten your track on a firm quiet base and it will be better.

Take good care

Oh, you mean just like the real thing ... BigGrin
Anyone who has ridden the railbus to the Leonard Weiss plant at the IMA will tell you.

So who needs a sound decoder in one of these when you have the sound built in?
