With all the loco's I have,all need to be towards the 150 grade on the controller,before the bulb in them lights,and headlamps show.It is the same on my second circuit.Many loco's need to be run at a higher speed than the full size counterparts would ever have been capeable of before they light.
I guess this is why most want to try led's,but its not really feasable .......

Hello.

You are right, LED lighting is expensive to purchase for our older locomotives. If you have one locomotive which you especially like you may consider an upgrade.

High-Tech-Modellebahn still sells LED modules but you will pay dearly. A link to them was recently posted, use search to find it in the forums.
