I have a very nice BR23 that I picked up on ebay and converted with a lok pilot 3.0 - it runs nice. I was surprised to see that it had a plastic body (boiler etc) as I thoght the BR 23's were metal. At any rate, I looked it up on HF Kern's web site and saw that their were two Marklin loks listed with the same numbers on the lok (also some Primex).
3005 Marklin 1954 - 1972 23 014

3097 Marklin 1969 - 1970 23 014

Mine has DA800 as well as 'Marklin" on the tender.

I assume mine is the 3097 that was made for two years and is the plastic one. Was this from a set or what was the deal?

This first DA800 (1954-55) had plastic body.

No, 3097 (1969-70) had metal body, but with simplified valve gears.

So, when I look in my 1964 catalogue, it says the body is metal. Mine is actually older and plastic?

Yes. You got the first plastic version (from 1954-1955) when it was still called DA800 in the 1954-1955 catalog.

It is a very fine and robust model and I have one in my collection. You'll like it.

Well by looking at this one, it looks brand new. The gold bands around the boiler and the red stripe down the rails are perfect. Hopefully, someone else will confirm this identification as it looks too new to be of that age.
I converted it and threw the parts into a bag with a lot of others. Oh well, probably would have converted it anyway - by the way, it starts smoothly on the first click on my CS2 (pulling the 4228 set)
and is very powerfull.

Yes I confirm the year abd tge plastic body.
And it is indeed a good powerfull loco.
I have mine converted with smokegenerator, 5pole highefficiency motor, Led's front & tender,

The DA800 and 3005 are one and the same model. One of Marklins most popular models of the time.
The Da800 with the plastic body was made in 1954 and 1955
The DA800 with the metal body was made from 1956 to 1958.
After that it was lettered 3005 until the end of production in the early 70's.
The plastic bodied one is the most sort after version and commands
a premium price on ebay
