My AI search for the status of the exemption after tonight's "news" says that the exemption will expire 29-8-25. So if you can get something shipped and through US Customs before 29 Aug and its declared value is US$800 or less, there's no import tariff due. There's apparently some other language on how "postal shipments" will be handled, but I'm unclear on how those may or may not delay the tariffs due. And of course, it could all change again in the next 29 days...Laugh

Time to shop! Or make a run and get back over the border with your prizes! I'm thinking of a run to Summerland, BC. Walter @ Euro Rail Hobbies, will you be around in August? BigGrin

The following news item (translated) is currently circulating in our media:

Mr. T. ends duty-free status for small packages. From the end of August, packages sent to the U.S. below the previous exemption limit of $800 will be subject to customs duties. This puts particular pressure on online retailers from China and platforms such as Shein and Temu.

Although I am personally not affected, this doesn't sound too good. How are you modelers in the U.S. planning to react? Mass purchases from Europe/Asia in the remaining days/weeks? Stopping the hobby? The forum seems surprisingly quiet with regard to this topic. Is everybody shocked, or is it expected that he will chicken out yet again?

No specific discussion of politics is intended, although I probably share the opinion of 99 percent of the Europeans relating to the guy... Flapper

It's a cluster "f" situation all around here. Stock markets dove Friday, again this morning. Dollar dropping, worth .80 to the Euro. Prices up. Not for Petrol because oil also dove. Gold rose of course.

The real injustice are the tariffs on Switzerland! 39% possibly. AFAIK, Switzerland charges no tariffs. At least my Rolex will be more valuable Cool

I don’t know how all this will end. So far, all my shipments from Deutschland have been tariff free. Received two last month, both well over $800.

Not sure how the collection of tariffs and duty will be done as the focus has been on trimming agencies and pivoting manpower to ICE and customs (immigration) enforcement.
I am sure that this will be fleshed out.

While this does make a difference to suppliers it is the Americans that pay the price if they want to buy from China or the EU etc. Can American companies make goods at the same price as the Chinese and others. I dont think so. Mr T enjoys what he does without quite understanding what he is actually doing. Anyway wont last forever and sense will return in the future.
However we are only interested in model rail and I am sure we will survive as will Marklin but I do see extra costs for our USA friends but sit tight and save some cash until normal times return.
I hope USA model shops can continue and are not forced to close.
Take care I like Marklin and will defend the worlds greatest model rail manufacturer.

Although not necessarily related to the De Minimis exemption, prices from my online US dealers are up quite a bit. ThumbDown

In the past I could convert the Marklin retail price in Euros to dollars and the dealers would be listing the models for 15-20% less. Now the US dealer prices are at full price and I assume it is because of the on again, off again, random tariffs in the US. No matter what anyone says tariffs are a sales tax on the buyer and they are making Marklin trains less affordable here.

Jim

I have almost all Märklin and mostly HO, although I do have a small number of Z gauge trains!
So many trains and so little time.

I have enough to keep myself busy with setting up my new lay-out.
2028 is not that far away, so I will be good to go,
2026 midterm elections will be interesting to watch as well, expect things to change a lot.
Besides, TACO, nothing is final and everything is subject to change, sometimes daily.

Very true for me too Tim. I am working on a design for my new layout, and not buying more trains for a while is really for the best.

Hopefully there are more rational times in our future and we all will be good to go. I just hope our small business Marklin dealers can weather the uncertainty.

Good luck with the new layout. My design still needs a lot of work.

Jim

Yes, myself as well Tim and Dickinson j. Glad we're on the same page for the 🌮 taco. Some wonder if we will have mid terms. I hope we don't need to make a major purchase soon. I have a model on preorder but I might have to pass if they increase the price. Besides I really don't want to pay more. I have the pre-order invoice saved.

I have the first Insider train on order, including both sets of coal hoppers, which is already a lot of money. I do wonder what the final price will be and although I don't want to pay more I also want this to be fair for my long time dealer. Tough decisions for both buyers and dealers right now.
