Hello,
has anyone ever mounted Kadee couplers (17, 18 or 19) on a Marklin 30000 (class 89.0 tank locomotive). It's NEM pockets equipped. Thanks for your help.

I recommended you long Kadee couple and i believe it´s number 380-19.
If you feel unsure you can try extra long 380-20.

How do you handle the 'uncouple bar' of the Kadees? In my experience they get stuck at pukos near switches when used for AC/Marklin.

There is work toy you can bend uncouple bar or even better way to cut a piece off the uncouple bar. I have seen märklinist use Kadee couples without problem. I too used Kadee before.

If I can ask a stupid question here. Why fit Kadee couplers? What is the benefit?

I bought a second hand sbb hamo croc from my dealer in n1991. It was on consignment from a retired doctor's collection. He had Kadees in it. Useless to me, so I put the original couplers back on.

Kadee do also have NEM pocket standard by just simple click into it.

Not back then Goofy! My Croc doesn't have n.e.m. pockets. It has the old button clip in pocket.

I understand that, but what is the benefit of kadee couplers compared to the Märklin couplers? Or is it just personal preference?

Sigh...okay...Full ConfessionBlushing

For me...personally...Blushing !!!

I have not done the whole "remote uncoupling-coupling" beyond my 5112/5113 m-track and my "popsicle stick" uncoupler...but I am a way old guy. Stay with me here...Please

HOWEVER!!!ThumpUp

If one has some remote areas wherein one may need some remote shunting or a LOT of shunting, car-spotting at stations and industries, shadow stations et al....OR one has major industrial or passenger facilities which require moves thither and yon, that are "remote" so to speak...

then I could possibly see the advantage to Kadee couplers...possibly...allowing for that pesky need for the magnetic pads required for the full remote activity - and nodding to the above note regarding the interference with the pukos

My biggest problem, believe it or not RollEyes , is that kadee knuckle couplers are not really near my "Prototype foe Everything" mentality (such as it isLOL ( in re Euro trains - Loop + turn-buckle)), beyond a few ultra-Era VI-VII remote-control loks which have a version of a knuckle coupler.

Again...personally I do not like the vision of knuckles on Euro train other than those to which they have been randomly applied...

and, cough, cough...obviously US/Canada outline loks and cars would be seen with knuckle couplers...Blushing

And yet... Dr Dirt's Rule #1 - Your Railroad, Your Rules!

Go for itCool

p.s. apparently Kadees are not friendly for coupling on curves, but that may be just urban legend - care to be taken

On my Union-Pacific oriented layout the KaDee-style couplers are somewhat more realistic than the Märklin couplers. As to coupling on curves, the KaDee-style couplers tend to be a little less difficult than the Märklin ones.

I am writing "Kadee-style" as my experience with real Kadees in Märklin NEM pockets is somewhat underwhelming. Some time ago I posted about this here

I asked KaDee about this, but their response was that their NEM couplers are in accordance with NEM standards (but those do not specify the thickness of the coupler shaft). The 1.5mm of the KaDees differs from the 1.6mm of couplers supplied with Trix US cars. Out of curiosity I have ordered KaDee-style knuckle couplers from a Chinese supplier, and these have the same shaft thickness as the Trix ones (same manufacturer?).
