I was browsing through a 1974 catalogue and the thought came to me that many of the locos in it are "iconic" Marklin locos.

If you were to have a small layout representing Marklin in the 1970s, what locos would you have to include.

My choice would be:

3000 Br89
3092 S 3/6
3054 Br103
3015 crocodile
3021 Br220
3016 railbus

What do you think?

Good one, Gregor. The 3047 was definitely a Marklin classic. It disappeared in the early '70s and was replaced by the 3084 Br50, which then became a classic as well, in my opinion, but the 3047 has more Marklin character!

3048 should be there also. I think it's a must.

3031 was also very prototypical, little tank w/telex.

Hi Ray,

The 3042 German BR 111 Electric. Very 70-ish to me - as prototype and as M model.
Marklin HO - all eras and everything.

Thanks for your contributions.

Brakepad - you're right. If 3047 is on the list, then 3048 must be too! Maybe also the 3085, which took over from the 3048. For many, the 3031/3032 has the next step up from the 3000, so we must have that one too.

Troy - 3042 is a good one.

Steven - 3053 is good. I also have 3054 on the list. I think we can combine them on the list.

OK, the list so far!

3000 Br89
3092 S 3/6
3053/3054 Br103
3015 crocodile
3021 Br220
3016 railbus
3031/3032 Br81
3047 Br44
3084 Br50
3048 Br01
3085 Br03
3042 Br111

The list is growing!

Thank you for compiling this list, Ray. Some of these locomotives I have in my collection, but many not. I would love to get back the 3021 that I lost many years ago, and hopefully the 3015 one day.

Cheers,

3042 should definitely be in there, a very under-stated model. It doesn't look like much but it really grows on you. I've replaced the pantographs on mine (still the scissors type, just the new blackened ones in place of the slightly manky originals) and it looks great.

I see the 1970s as a big changeover period for Marklin. 1972 saw the first plastic coaches (4091/2/3/4 should definitely be on that '70s layout in all their multicoloured POP splendour) and over the following years they slowly moved towards more accurate scale models. 3042 for example really captures the look of a Br.111. It may not be as detailed as Roco or others, but you can take an original example, change the pantographs for the new blackened ones, fit close coupling heads and have something that looks perfectly at home alongside 2009 Marklin.

You certainly need a 3053 or 3054, but not with a Delta decoder. They didn't exist then.

3085 Br03
3042/3155 Br111

3074/3075 Br216
3066/3067/3067 Nohabs
3072 Br212

Spitz, I have not included your suggestion of a Br52. The first one was in Marklin's catalogue in 1994. The 218 and 120 were also not made by Marklin in the '70s.

Come on guys, we're on a roll!

Hi Lutz, impressive list.

I'm looking for locos you would have seen in the '70s on a Marklin layout. Maybe you could edit your list to only show those which would have been in the Marklin range in the '70s? Sorry about the confusion.

Glancing down your list I spotted the 3039. I think most layouts at the time would have had at least one of 3034,3037,3039,3040. They will have to go on the list too!

Lutz mentioned DHG locos.
3078 (blue) and/or 3080 (yellow, simplified) are a must.
There also was a two-axled Primex version.

I don't see a 3029 (pr. T 3) on the list.
The KLVM is also missing.

Not to forget that cyan French loco, that brown Italian loco, and locos from other countries

Good one, Gregor. The 3047 was definitely a Marklin classic. It disappeared in the early '70s and was replaced by the 3084 Br50, which then became a classic as well, in my opinion, but the 3047 has more Marklin character!

Yes that's right. 1974 is my oldest surviving Marklin catalog. I've had it from new, which makes it 35 years old! I know the items in the catalogue like the back of my hand, from having drooled over it so much in my teen years! I did have the 1972 catalogue as well, but it got so tatty I think my Mum threw it out.[V]

<br />The 1972 catalogue was the first catalogue I got in my teen years, and the pictures in that catalogue inspired my interest from then on.

1971 Catalog did the same thing for me. My copy of the catalog is very tattered, but I also have a scanned pdf file of a mint copy. I built the layout that was in that year's catalog.

The really 1970's? No big deal.

Even for a 21 sq. meter layout, read the story and see the pictures on:

That's a great (and sad) story Frits. A pity your Dad's layout had to be demolished. But you would have some great memories, and it looks like you still have his locos and rolling stock.

Nice Lutz!

I loved those Minex trains. Pity they didn't last long in the catalogue.

I just received my V-230 (39300) today. in Era IV livery. I cannot begin to tell how amazed and thrilled I am at this wonderful Märklin model. I cannot take my eyes off it. The motor features are first-class, very quiet and reliable, the heavy metal body is a sight for sore eyes. The functions are to die for! No words can describe what I am feeling. I will run it with my Era IV POP 303mm ROCO coaches. It will be a dream consist. Why can't Märklin be always as reliable with everything else that come from their vaults? If it was possible to fit this wonderful model with a sinus motor and functions, why couldn't they do the same with the new E03 (37575), or the Prussian BR38? Most of the times, I don't get you Märklin...
Best regards,
Armando García

Hi All,

I agree with Juhan about the #3003. One of my favourites.

Cheers,

The V 300 (not V 230) is newly developed - and they developed it for the SDS.

E 03, 151, and Re 460 made the step back from original C-Sine to HEP because M* would have to develop new powered trucks to fit an SDS. Surely they would be more quiet with SDS (and E 03 would lose the visible cog wheels), but M* didn't invest time and money to do it now.
It would take more time and money to make both trucks powered ...

Making this investment now looks like a good idea (strategically, long term profit), but OTOH they need a buyer and want to look good this year (making profit in 2009).
With SDS they may have sold more E 03s - but would that compensate the extra investment?
Regards
Tom

I didn't see the 3071/4071 TEE set mentioned. That's a must have.

Anotehr vote here for the 3034 in turquoise and cream livery biggrin as I bought one new in 1976. This was on a school exchange visit to NDW and the old E44 was starting to get tired.
I also bought a 1975 brochure 9as that is all the shop had at the time). This then went along side my 1958 and 1959 brochures that I pored over and wished I could buy. Especially the E18 was one of my favourites then the 216, which I bought in 1988.I'm still waiting to buy an anologue E18 wink

This topic is real interesting - except it has turned into a wish list of every train in the catalogs of the seventies.

Maybe the question instead should be what trains did you have on your layout in 1974?

I was 10 years old my self at that time and i had a moddest layout with four lokomotivs,
those being the BR89 cat#. 3000, the railcar 3016, the ÖBB 1141 cat# 3036 and the EA 800 cat# 3044.

Philip

Let's keep it simple.
