Hello all,
I recently purchased a Gopro Black 10. I got a really good deal on it so I can make some nice vids of my trains to share with you guys.
My patience with computers is getting worse and worse. I made one video and it took me forever to get it to run on my computer.
One day my PC decided to put all new files wherever it wants to. I can't find anything.
Then, I updated the PC to windows 11.
Now my other cameras don't work either.
I regret buying the camera and I'll probably throw it in a junk box far away so I don't have to look at it.
I am not looking for help or sympathy. I just need to vent.
Over the years I have tried to embrace technology and have done OK with it so far but now I hate it with a passion.
Any future images of my layout will be done in pencil on paper then I'll just hand it to my dog so he can play with it. At least someone can enjoy it.

You'll get no arguments from me Mikey - in fact I can feel myself getting frustrated on your behalf!
I don't think I've bought anything techy in the last twenty years where I haven't had to strongly resist the urge to throw it as far as I can during the first few days.
We can't be the only ones... can we???
Marklin HO using M track. Now reverted to analogue as I find it has more character and is more fun...... and I understand it!

Won't help the venting, but i find my Android phone camera great for pics, incl widescreen, and short videos for upload (sometimes after basic editing w phone app). I use a tripod most of the time.

I have been interested in computers since 1956 and have owneda variety of them since around 1975. I have gone through most updates of the software beginning with Visicalc and one of the earliest databases and word processors. But the recent updates have left me in the dust and I have no need to catch up with them. I recently tried to do something with email that I did some 20 years ago with ease and was completely unable to figure out how the new process worked. Lets face it, we are old.

Yep. I have Windows 11 and it took a while to get back some of the old stuff on Windows 10.

Not all that long ago on here we were driving trains but now all types of software has appeared which drive them for us and much of the fun we had here has now gone.
I cant imagine driving a model rail loco with a phone.
Apologies to all the computer whizz kids out there.
As Nev said we dont have light bulbs only dark suckers.
Take care I like Marklin and will defend the worlds greatest model rail manufacturer.

When our club layout is at a show its large size, 17' X 34' makes it impossible for the operator to do much of anything except watch the trains - four to five of them - and keep things running smoothly. So I usually follow the trains around the layout with an iPad connected to the CS3 with two of the locos with sound on it. When one of them is near visitors, especially children, I operate the horns or bells and love to see their reactions. I love the CS3 because it is so intuitive and flexible making it possible for operators to investigate wherever they want or ignore its depth.

The saying "I wish I were a kid again" doesn't seem so attractive anymore. I think I'll stay as I am.

I agree. I am also happy being old. You can be grumpy and everyone sort of expects it. I just wish that there were few less odd aches and pains. Smile

The apprentiship to become a fully fledged "Grumpy Old Git" is the longest apprentiship in the world - 55 or 60 years.
However, if you put the hours and effort in the rewards are there to be had. You can thoroughly enjoy moaning and grumping about anything and everything. You've earned the right so enjoy it.

To be honest it's probably the only qualification I've got!

So far today I've been for a coffee and walked the dog - I've managed to have a good gripe about Football, Tesco cereal, the price of coffee, parking, cars generally, banking systems, socks and the dog...
... and it's only nine o'clock!

Paul Dont forget the weather. Up here in the Glen its blowing a gale. Also Im building a small Faller kit and a part just fell off the table landed on a carpet which always matches the colour of the part. Also why do I now get glue where it is not supposed to be.

Well so much for 65 being the new 50. I'd rather be pleasant than crabby, but it depends on the pain threshold for the knees, etc. at any given time. Why do I insist on still pushing the lawn mower when it has power drive? It's not heavy when you mulch because no clippings fill up the catcher. Pain in the wee hour's of sleep can require a pillow under the knee. Or I put my headphones 🎧 on and fall asleep in my recliner to mood enhancing music. One of those stereo egg chairs from the 1970s might be cool.

I certainly don't want to start any wars here, but as a grumpy old guy I fondly remember the good old days of pure analogue model trains. Everything was simply and straightforward then, one was able to repair a Märklin or HAG locomotive in a couple of minutes (mostly just a drop of oil or re-soldering a loose wire). You only had to turn the knob on top of the transformer, and the train(s) began to run. No frustrating digital stuff with endless technical gibberish (CV's etc.) which only a handful of specialists are able to understand. No wonder the hobby is dying. Mad

As to computers, after a short (and quite successful) spell with an Olivetti ETV word processor, my wife had the most brilliant idea in 1988 to introduce me to the Apple Macintosh. I have been using these gadgets with the greatest pleasure since then, never even came near, let alone touched a Windows monstrosity (sorry, no flame wars please Wink). My favorite photographic cameras have been Leicas (simple models preferred). They, too, are mostly hassle-free.

At almost 72, I plan to stick to the equipment I currently have and peacefully leave all modern junk to the youngsters. Happy traditional model railroading!

Agree with all of that. However at 72 you are just a youngster. At 83 I am still about 19 in my head its just the rest iof me that doesnt work too well.

Regarding your comment on working on locos HAG were great and very easy to keep going but dont know what they are like now.
For me it is a CS3 and that is it as I dont see what else would be needed and anyway I like to drive trains but I do understand that today is different and younger members herewill want to sit back and push buttons and have the latest computer stuff.

If you like to drive locos you should try "World of Operations" with an mfx+ steam locomotive. Start with not needing replenishment and work your way up. Even the non-steam locos are fun but not near as much a challenge.
