Hello everyone.

Last year I bought the French loco 3038 on eBay, and put it aside. I brought it out recently, to put it digital (DCC, not Marklin). Not having French carriages, I looked around and, still on eBay, I found 2 4050 and 1 4076 (I think that one has an interior). One that I received already had the shoe, the other two did not. So I added the shoe 7198.

And I discovered that on the 5100 curves, the bogie with the shoe derails. All 3 derail. By chance, do you know if it is a known thing, or is it something else.

I thought of adding a few grams, thinking that the carriages are a bit light.

Let me know. Thanks.

Cheers
Leo

Run the carriages very slowly into the curve where they derail and watch them very carefully. I had a similar problem with some carriages and discovered that the trucks were causing the wheels to come off the rails. The trucks in question seemed to get stuck and have something which interfered with their movement. I worked the trucks and lubricated them with silicone which seemed to solve the problem. Others have noticed that a carriage at the end of a consist with a slider at the very end would also have a derail problem. The slider seems to force the back of the carriage off the rails. Moving the slider to the front of the carriage seemed to resolve the problem. If that is not possible I would add weight to the carriage above the slider to see if that helps retain the truck on the rails. The other problem encountered was that the slider would short out the layout. If moving the slider is not possible then perhaps replacing it with a shorter one might work.

Hi Leo
the 7198 pick-up shoes work perfectly with 4050 and 4076 cars BUT you must check the following:
- the slider (shoe) should not press too hard on the Pukos otherwise is causes lift-off. At rest the shoe should ne 2 mm past the rail surface.
- the bogies were with moving flanges which could cause derailment on lesser quality M track (bent / open rail joiners, etc) so EITHER you use good quality M track OR, you bend the little metal tabs that limit the flanges rotation so that rotation is almost inexistant (and of course all 8 wheels make a good contact with a straight rail.
- another solution is to add deadweight into the cars (especially the one with a slider on the extremity where it is)

Cheers
Jean

Yes Jean, sometimes the shorter shoe is better. I use inexpensive lead soapbox derby car weights that come with self stick strips. They separate at the seams so you can double the thickness if needed. Acrylic paints work fine to match the interior colors. They usually fit up against the corridor ends behind the windows or inside the water closests. On some cars, they can be put on the floors.

Thank you all for the suggestions. The sliders I put on were new, so I did not check how much they were lower past the rail head. I will check that.

Since this was a quick test, I did not do any maintenance on them, so lubrication will be needed.

Also, For the weight, I have already thought of placing a few grams at the very ends of the cars, out of the way from the windows.

For the track, I am using M track. I also have C track, but it is put away, and I have no access to it at the moment. And the state of my M track, well, it is old, and well used, but except these cars, all the rest go over it with no issues.

Still, i will make sure it is in good order.

Thank you again. I will pass along what i find following your suggestions.

Cheers
Leo
