Joined: 06/11/2024(UTC) Posts: 52 Location: Georgia, Atlanta		Guys, we have a beautiful BR 64 that is loaded with features but the speaker seems to be dead. I’m nervous about trying a speaker from another loco because I’m not sure if they’re compatible. Should be really cheap to get another little generic speaker. Any suggestions?

Joined: 12/08/2006(UTC) Posts: 9,273		I did tried to find a new speaker by search at Märklins homepage and the shops. This speaker are no longer exist as spare. I am not really sure about speakers Ohm impedance and maximum VA. Maybe it stand on the speaker if you careful loss the speaker from the locomotive?

Joined: 10/02/2021(UTC) Posts: 3,876 Location: Michigan, Troy		Check the speaker output from the decoder with an ohm meter and order a cube speaker that matches. They are only about $15. If you don't get any readings from the decoder it's the trouble, not the speaker.

And I think all of Marklin's are the same. No, the locos that had the ESU V3 decoders (the earliest mfx locos) had a 100 ohm speaker, and these were well known for going open circuit. There are 100 ohm speakers still available if you go digging around. The 39649 I beleive is a loco that would fall into this category, as other members of the 3964x family did have the very early mfx decoders with 100 ohm speakers.

Once you remove the existing speaker it will have its impedence written on it, these days its all 4 or 8 ohm which are both fine. Measure its diameter. The old loksound 3 series decoders used 100 ohm speakers (or 2x 50ohm in series) which is the only time you'll get in trouble. I've replaced the speaker on my Marklin BR05 twice now, only cost a couple $

The speaker is probably 8 Ohm, but it could also be 100 Ohm (or 50 Ohm plus 50 ohm resistor) so it's best to double check. Most likely you have an early mfx+ "gen 2" decoder with firmware 2.x.x.x If the speaker is 8 Ohm, then the decoder should be able to take most small 4 to 8 ohm speakers. you should then be able to find something suitable on e.g https://www.mouser.com/c/electromechanical/audio-devices/speakers-transducers/ E.g. I have used this 28mm speaker for replacement when space is limited, PUI Audio AS02808MR-LW152-R, but when possible I use a thicker /bigger and better speaker. (slightly better than the original but nothing major.) You could also try to send Märklin an email, and ask if the speaker has a replacement part number. Note: make sure that the speaker terminals/wires do not touch the locomotive chassis etc, if that happens the decoder will be damaged. (when powered)
