About 1.5 years ago I had bought a Marklin Z gauge GG-1 with a set of six cars for my Grandson. I reported that it would barely pull the six cars on the level and certainly not up even the slightest grade. I recently (in Model Railroader Magazine) came across a product call "Bullfrog Snot" (yes, really) that is a liquid plastic traction tire material that is applied to one or more wheels. When it cures, it forms a traction tire. I was thinking that this may be my solution. See: http://www.bullfrogsnot.com/Does anyone have any experience with this product? |

Never have heard of that stuff. thanks for the link. but it looks like its made for N scale so it might work.
If it can dry smooth then it might work but any but if it is not concentric to the wheel it could be like tiring to drive a car with one of those parking vitiations boots on the wheel. Also one bad drop and it might lock up the lok |

They say to turn the lok upside down and power it so the wheels are turning while you apply it and let it run while it cures so it stays even. Sounds reasonable. I think I'll buy some and try it.

This product was reviewed in the May 09 issue of Model Railroader (WWW.railroader.com) page 82. They said to let the lok dry for 24 hours. 1 oz jar for $ 24.95, and increases pull substantially.

Ron, I'm a little surprised at the performance of the GG1. I don't have one myself, but surely it can't be all that different from any other Marklin e-lok. My E 03 easily pulls seven TEE coaches around 195 mm curves. |

Well, the experience is mixed on the Bullfrog Snot. I applied it to two of the six axles of th GG-1 (four drive wheels). It pulls better, but still not good enough in my estimation (this is in addition to the 1 oz of lead I had put in previously). It runs fairly good at low speeds on flat surface pulling the six coaches, but as I increase speed, the wheels still slip. It will not pull the coaches up even the slightest grade.
On the other hand, my HO 39980 Scheinenbus only had one traction tire and had some trouble getting itself and two unpowered units up some of my grades. I put some of the stuff on the other wheel on the axle with the tire and it works perfectly now.
I may try a second coat on the GG-1 to see if that helps. |

Gary: I just noticed your post. I really have very little experience with Z. This is my Grandson's stuff. I thought the GG-1 would be a good addition, but it really is a disappointment. I bought him an ICE set a few years ago and don't recall it having this problem. |

Ron, are all the wheels setting equally on the track and are all the wheels that are suppose to be driven turning?
I am sure you have check this but are the 6 coaches rolling freely? I cant imagine that the weight of the 6 Z coaches it to much for the GG-1 to pull on level ground. If you put just the coaches at the top of the grade do they roll down.
The only other think I can think of is to clean the track real good to make sure it can give as much traction as possible |

As far as I can tell, all the wheels are sitting well on the track. Yes, all six axles are turning. The track is in good shape, also. As to the coaches, I feel that there is a little more rolling resistance than I would have expected. Is it wise to lubricate the axles on these coaches? And if so, any guidance on that? |

Ron, with all the passenger coaches I have the metal wheel sets turn in plastic trucks and that would be the obvious point to lubricate. However I've read in a number of places that lubricants and plastic do not make good bedfellows. You could check to see that there's no lint or other fibres caught up in the wheel bearings, including the centre bearing on each axle. The bearings might even have picked up gunk (who knows what or where from though!). |

I would use Labelle 108 on the axles it is plastic compatible (108) is the lightest oil and is good on z |

I applied a second coat of the Bullfrog Snot to two wheels (one axle) on each bogie. It pulls like a champ now. It can pull the string of 6 coaches around a sharp curve and up a gentle incline without so much a a slip now. I am quite pleased with the stuff. |

Great to hear it. When I get some time, I will try it on a 1'E (2-10-0) loco and see how I get on, but don't hold your breath. Chris. |
