Those who frequent the Marklin Bar & Grill email list will have seen some posts about the poor attendance at the Toy Fair. Apparently (at least) one dealer turned up to order from Marklin only to be told at least some of the items they wanted to order were already sold out at the factory.

And I thought the whole idea was that Marklin could gauge interest in an item, so as to prepare the factory for the volume needed.Confused

In general, with the internet, and early release of the models, many dealers don't see the need to spend the time or money to attend these shows. Not just model trains either. Basel World, which used to be a major watch trade fair has essentially gone out of business. Some of it was due to outrageous prices charged by local hotels and restaurants in Basel.

Basel World has been replaced by Watches and Wonders and will be held in Geneva this year.Mellow

The Dusseldorf model expo is soon, I think German dealers are focusing on these shows.

I think you mean Dortmund. But it is not a trade show.

I confuse Dortmund with Duddledorf because they are in close proximity. The Koln show looked very good too.

Cologne is no more. The IMA organisers couldn't reach agreement with the Messe hall owners and so left Cologne. They now hold it in Friedrichshaven in late October.

Good morning from Nurenmberg

The model train section of the fair is a disaster

Only Marklin, Faller, Noch and Hornby
The usual Hall 7A no more
A Small section of Hall 7 between all sort of other things.

In Marklin TRIX LGB there are the majority of the new Items.
There are very nice and interesting models.

But already you know them. That's i thing is the main reason that there is no any interest in the Fair

For me I think is the last time after many years

Regards

Costas

Sad news I think. The fair has been an annual big event with awards given to certain models. Marklin used to imprint the underside of locomotive bogies with the stamp on winners. Other items could be special toy fair issues with the rocking horse logo.
So looks like the Marklin days in Goppingen is it going forward.

The Nuremberg Spielwarenmesse has always been an industry event. It was an occasion for dealers and distributors to visit the manufacturers in one place and to present and accept orders for the coming year.
In today's economy, information can be made available on the web and business can be done without leaving your home or office.
Other shows (Dortmund, etc) were always more aimed at the end customer and focused less on dealers and distributors.
Maerklin Days is just another customer oriented event but caters specifically to Maerklin/Trix and LGB.

As was mentioned above, Nuremberg was traditionally the first fair of the New Year and was scheduled to overlap with the manufacturer's release of new items. This enabled the manufacturers to collect confirmed orders from distributors and dealers (Nuremberg was never about the end customer, although this started to change around 2000). Today, manufacturers have distributors for more territories and release their new items information online, so events like the Toy Fair are less essential to their marketing plans. Other trade shows are more oriented towards the end customer and not focused as much on dealers and distributors. They still do provide an opportunity for manufacturers to meet and greet customers and dealers. These trade shows are more regional and are used to maintain a connection with modellers, clubs and dealers in those regions.
The covid pandemic changed the way that many look at these shows as people avoided large gatherings and customers and companies made the realization that it is not essential to be present at all these events. It remains to be seen if they eventually return to larger attendance or whether this is just the new reality.

And many car shows have been canceled or are being held on a smaller scale than before. As much good as the internet brings us, it also changes some things, but my biggest regret is that there are fewer and fewer stores where you can pick up and look at a model before buying it.

I agree, to me there is no greater pleasure than going to a train market or visiting a store and handling the items before you buy AND finding that surprise item you weren’t expecting to find.

However, it should be noted that there used to be fewer manufacturers and a hundred times fewer models, today it would not be possible to have everything in one place!
I remember in the 60s when I looked at the Marklin catalog, which had about 30 pages, and dreamed that one day I would have everything from it (which came true much later). But today's catalogs are thick books and no one dreams of owning everything anymore?
