Hello.

Would anyone know what the difference is between these two Swiss Locomotives models? 3338 and 3638?

Thanks.

3338 is analogue and 3638 is digital (6080 decoder), otherwise identical.

33xx are analogue or Delta, 36xx are digital with 6080 decoder.

hello !

If I remember correctly,
if you use these locomotives in analog mode,

- those equipped with the Delta module (33..) have the lights that work.
- those equipped with the Digital 6080 module (36..) have lights that do not work.

(this is a note only for operation in conventional mode).

Best Regards
Joël

A 33xx loco only has an electronic reverse unit. A 34xx is a Delta decoder and a 36xx is digital.

There were analogue 34xx locos (like 3414 and 3419). And there were Delta locos with 33xx numbers (like 3331).

Thank you. It's just weird because the box of the 3638 is a white box and doesn't say "digital" but the item is 3638.

Correct because they were all white until the mid 90s when digital boxes were done with light gray.

I think they didn't start grey boxes until the 37xx series was issued.

I remember I bought a BR86 with 6080 (3696) and it had a dark grey box, but not sure if at the the time 37xx already existed, although I think no…

I have a 3636 Ae6/6 11425 Geneve that was released in 1991 along with the 3638 Bern. The box is grey and there is the digital chip red sign on the loco drawing.
My first digital loco was a 3689 NS mP3000, then I bought it before 1991 for sure, and it has a grey box

Thanks all.

I guess it just depends on the year it was issued.

My 3638 has a gray tray and liner. This particular model was only available in 1991 along with the 3336/3636.
The 3336 and 3338 models had a white tray and liner.

The next year (1992), Maerklin brought out the 3339/3739 11426 (red) Zuerich City and the year after (1993) the 3337/3737 (green) Basel City.

I am wondering whether a number of the "Bern" and "Geneva" models for the Swiss market might have been produced with white tray and liner.
Other possibility... There was a time when Maerklin sold replacement boxes for models. I am also wondering whether it might be a case where the original owner replaced the gray tray and liner with a new one which was white?

Regards

Mike C

Good questions. I went through my boxes and noticed that the earlier grey boxes are also a lighter shade.
