The 3106 was the last steam loco in my collection that I converted from a previous 6080 decoder to a more modern digital decoder last year.

I have converted many of my previous 6080s to more modern digital, usually using LokPilot with a 21MTC adaptor board but in this locomotive that arrangement was too tall, as you have also found with the 60975.

I ended up using an ESU LokPilot v4.0 54616, removed the plug and wired direct to the various elements. Current equivalent would be the v5 59616.

You can use the Marklin 60985. No base is needed and definitely there is enough space for the decoder and the small speaker. Also there is no need for programming

I opened my 3106 today.
My recollections were a bit of a "senior moment" in that I did not find the LokPilot/ 21MTC adapter too high, it was too wide, hence my change to a direct wired ESU LokPilot v4.0 54616 without the 21MTC adapter, splicing onto the previous wiring.

I also now recollect that when initially fitted, the "motor" did appear too high to fit the plastic shell (but this was due to the brushplate and attachments being too high) and after inverting the motor unit (as can be seen from the side images below), it was an exact height to the frame and fitted fine. (I owe the idea of inverting the motor unit to fit in some steamers to Bigdaddynz)
Koll's indicates only one version of the 3016, interestingly I see your frame is painted grey whilst mine is red. I seem to recall comments on this group before (I think perhaps from HO ?) noting that despite Koll's data, there are at times several variations in the locos of a seemingly unique catalogue number over time.

Mine is also 78-355, although yours looks to be in better shape cosmetically. I didn’t realize you could mount the motor cover upside down but it must be difficult to get the brushes in.
