Hello everybody.
I wanted to try my new z21start station on a 36501 Marklin diesel. The z21start implements both the DCC and the MM protocol so I was surprised that the 36501 does not respond at all: no CV write, no read, no motion... I wonder if the loco decoder is maybe something very basic not compatible with the MM protocol. The instruction sheet does not give much information. The 36501 works correctly with an old Delta setup. If the problem is the decoder I could consider installing a new DCC decoder since I have other Marklin engines so equipped.
Thanks Giovanni

It doesn't specify it is MFX, and the Z-21 like the Roco Zimo decoders do use Railcom. I don't know if any screen graphics will even show on your devices. Does the Loco even have the Marklin CS3 user graphic function?

Does the Loco even have the Marklin CS3 user graphic function? Problem solved!! One needs to use the z21 Maintenance Tool. I installed it on my PC, then connected via Ethernet directly to the z21start station. On the SETTINGS page the box "Track signal type", which by default shows "DCC and MM" must be changed to "MM only". This requires Firmware V1.23. Then on the CV PROGRAMMING page the Programming Mode must be selected as "MM '6021 programming mode'" so one can modufy the desired CV. It looks like the CV can't be read back, however. In this way the Multimaus can control the locomotive. Unfortunatey it looks like the switch from "DCC and MM" to "MM Only" cannot be done from the Multimaus, so if one has some locos using DCC and others using MM a PC connection is required to go from one to the other. Apparently this can be easily achieved by the App running on a smartphone but this requires unlocking the z21 station, which comes at a price. Hope this can help!
