Guys, I am finally helping my dad rebuild his beautiful Marklin layout and we have hit a snag. We just got a new CS3 and we’re trying to register an old loco that has a decoder installed. Can anyone help me figure out how to add it?

Thank you RHFIL but I don’t think it’s an MFX decoder because it’s not auto recognizing.

Then you install the Loco. manually by looking at the dip switch positions on the decoder and looking at the address chart for them. Or you can set the swirtches to any address you want up to address 80. Once you kow the address, open the add Locomotive manually menu and set the address with the corresponding box, thern click OK.

Ok PERFECT, I didn’t know how to code the address from the dip switches. I’ll find the chart right now. How will I know if the dip switches are set to an address that’s already being used? My ON switches are 3-6-7. Trying to find the chart still…

I have the chart in the big CS3 book. 3,6,7 is address 11.

There are instructions in the manual on how to register non-mfx locos and if you do not have access to the decoder settings there is even a search feature which will look through all possible settings to find it. Finally if all else fails, often locos are shipped with setting 3, and owners change the setting to the BR number for ease in remembering.

This is DCC convention, but Märklin never did...
The pre-setting address is given in the user notice, often it is related to the loco series (a BR 50 addressed 50, a E 03 addressed 03, a V160 addressed 16). Some locos have Delta coding addresses, and these keep to be the preset addresses in new sound decoders, 78 for steamers and the others I forgot but you will find them in the MM addresses list.

If the Decoder is a Märklin with micro switches, either read the address and program it in your central, or give it a new address.
If the decoder is a programmable but not readable decoder (some fx...), give it a new address on the programmation rail.
If the decoder is programmable and readable, decoder, read it on the programmation rail or give it a new address on the programmation rail.

Some locos have microswitch decoders, but on Märklin website the notice shows a programmable fx decoder - that's when they changed the decoder in production time, so as for 37030 e.g.
I tried and retried to give her an address, but when I opened her I found a 60905 decoder with microswitches. ThumpUp

It is possible to run a locomotive with NO decoder? We have two beautiful old locos (one is a Class 89 probably from the 1940's) and I'm wondering if it's possible to run them?

Without upgrading NOPE ! Most likely it’s an old Märklin BR89 with Mechanical Reversing Unit - in plain English ANALOG Locomotive !

It is, using a transformer... or by installing a decoder.
You might prefer to preserve them as they are, with classic, analogical, technique, then find a transformer.
Otherwise, you might install a decoder type 60906 which "listens" to all modern digital central commands, and does not need any change on the motor but gives a driving character very similar to analogical technique. Or you get a new motor (60943 for an old 3000 or CM 800) and a decoder of your choice, that's a couple of dollars but you will get a new loco in an old body.

btw, the class 89 locomotive was introduced in 1953 as "CM 800" (inscription on the right cabin side), became 3000 in 1956 and continued with some evolutions until 2002 when it was replaced by the 30000. I do not know if the latest years of 3000 were not in reality pre-30000 years, with another motor type.
What type is the other old loco ?
