Hi,

This is my first question in this forum. Hope that this is the right place to post it.

I am building my first model railroad (Märklin H0), and in order to get started with automation I have just upgraded from the MS2 to the CS3+. I have three locomotives so far, two of them with mfx decoders. When I add the small Märklin shunter locomotive that came with my initial "Märklin Starter Set" purchase, it is easily discovered by the CS3+ and everything works like a charm.

However, I also have a DSB MZ 1425 from McK (Decas), and I am having troubles making it work with the CS3+. When I tell it to discover new mfx devices, I can see on the display that it really does discover a "DSB MZ", but it never shows up in the locomotive list. Does anybody know what to do?

I buildt a small test track and connected it to my MS2 (reset to factory settings), and there I had no problems discovering and running the locomotive.

Thanks!
/Michael

What is the Marklin part number of the loco? Marklin controllers use the loco info from a file that is in the memory of the device. Perhaps the CS3 has not been updated with the information. What software update is in the CS3? Have you read any manuals or watched any videos on registering locos on the CS3?

I had the same thing happen when I first installed a couple of the first MFX locos. A restart of my CS 3 solved it. I think searching for MFX devices is apart from searching for MFX locos. Otherwise if it is in fact installed but won't run, or you can't turn on functions, remove the loco. then try again.

The part number of the locomotive which doesn't show up? I don't know how to find that. There is nothing printed on the locomotive itself and there is nothing in the box/manual, either. It is not a Märklin locomotive, so maybe that is to be expected?

The software version on my CS3+ is 2.5.1(0). The name "DSB MZ" does show up on the display while the CS3+ is searching for new devices, but maybe that is not the same as the locomotive being in the memory of the device?

Yes, I have watched plenty of videos about the CS3+. Before getting started, I watched pretty much all of the very detailed videos by Bo Jensen (Model Train Fun). He goes through all the different ways to add locomotives, but since this one has mfx, I would expect it to work "out of the box". I can't figure out how to go ahead and add it manually. That requires an address, and there is no such information in the manual.

I tried restarting but that didn't solve the problem. Then I tried resetting the CS3+ and then I was able to detect it again using mfx, but it still didn't show up in the list. Maybe I'll have to bring both locomotive and CS3+ to the shop and get some help.

regarding the mz:
Make sure you have "Show all" enabled in the locomotive list.

try deleing the MZ from the MS2 controller, while it's on the track. and then move it over to the cs3.

other things you could try this before you go to the dealer:
1. disable the DCC and MM2 protocol on the CS3. (this might help if the decoder has eg dcc as the first priority)
2. then put the locomotive alone on the Programming track.
3. then try the "rediscover lost MFx locomotives" function

note. you won't find the MZ in the cs3 database, since it's made by McK.

Yes, that and by chance have you tried the "edit" Locos. menu to see if it shows up there with the oval icon at the window box bottom in red? I think I had that, and after I checked ok, exited th edit Loco. menuu, there it was. It may have showed up on the left or right knob as being operated though. I don't recall accurately.

It could be the problems with non Märklin mfx decoders in the later updates of the CS3 systems. Try and update the CS3 to the newest version. If you still have problems you could try and configure the locomotive as DCC instead of mfx. I have several mck locomotives but haven't updated my CS3 to the newer versions.

You could also try and post in the Danish baneforum.dk

Thanks! My problem has been solved. Since I did three different things at once, I'm not sure which one (or ones) did the trick. I wasn't familiar with the "programming track" concept, so I picked up valuable knowledge along the way! BigGrin

As mentioned in another reply, I managed to solve the problem. Thanks for providing the link to baneforum.dk. I just recently started building my model railroad and I'm still trying to find my way around.

The CS 3 is a bit much to navigate for the first time.

Agree! And as with many other Märklin products, I think the official manuals leave much to be desired. Without the "Model Train Fun" instruction videos, I would have been lost long ago.

Since the loco is not a Marklin one it would not be in the CS3 list of Marklin locos. However there are two ways you can get a picture onto your registry. First and easiest is by clicking on the picture screen which will bring up a list of Marklin locos in the CS3. You can then search through the list by entering the engine type and then clicking on a similar Marklin loco. The other better but more complicated method is downloading a picture in .gif format onto a thumb drive and then transferring that onto the CS3. Video here:

Thanks for the tip! That's gonna be very useful when I finally get to actually running trains on my layout. I've just finished the basic benchwork with two shadow stations and a main two-track line connecting them. My plan in to be able to run eight trains on the layout, so I still have a long way to go... I have downloaded pictures from manufacturers', retailer's, auction houses, even posted online by individuals. Sometimes you need to try different sites for the best picture.
