Just returned from another trip to Austria, this time Vienna. I was last there in 2018 and amongst other items bought one of two Miniclub stone blocks with loco in a light bulb and pen that Hilpert (was opposite Stephansdom, now sadly gone) was selling off, wish I had bought the other as well now.
This time re-visited Leopold Bannert in Werdertorgasse which thankfully was still there.
Bought Märklin beanie hat, tote bag and bottle opener plus the 81873 set produced to recreate an early set from the 1970s. I had seen one of these in Gaugemaster a few months ago, hesitated and when i went back it had gone so I snapped up the Viennese one.
It has track, controller, three coaches and a Cl 216 Diesel outline loco which, for comparison, weighs in at 28.4 grams and negotiates the 145mm radius curves on my test track with ease.
They also had a Swiss RE 6/6 88240 with the floating centre bogie, this weighs 31.6 grams and also works with 145mm curves.

For some time I have been looking at the one and only Z gauge loco in amongst the N gauge stuff at Alton Model shop and thought I had better buy it. Another Swiss, this time an RE 420 (26.2 grams) but it did not like the 145mm curves at all. I was surprised that it had the original design bogies held in by pins and found that one was very stiff to turn, a bit of working back and forth and some oil loosened it up and now performs perfectly with the 145 mm.

Earlier in the year I had bought three 2-10-0 locos from GM, 88847 Cl 50 Christmas loco (loco only, 27.4 grams) this does not like 145mm radius, connecting tender to loco is awkward and risks breaking something when doing so. Something plays ‘Jingle Bells’ when loco is going, not sure where sound is coming from yet.
Another was the Cl 44 complete with shed. This weighs 30.3 grams and the same comments apply re 145mm refusal and tender connection.
Third was 88846 Cl 50 in bronze with cab tender, only slightly heavier at 32.5 grams, same drawbacks as the other two. My older 2-10-0 locos all connect easily and negotiate 145mm curves.
Lastly I bought the 88026 Kleinwagen Reihe KIV 20 in blue to go with my red one, this VW weighs a tiny 8.2 grams.
Probably enough for this year.
