Hi,
On a Märklin railbus 39980 I believe I have a faulty C-sine motor. The motor cause random shorts and the decoder makes a buzzing noise. When I gently push the railcar forwards, so that the gears turn just a bit, it functinos again. This happens very frequently, several times on a 30cm section of test track.
So, my question is, is this likely a faulty motor or a faulty drive electronics for the motor and how do I know? The replacement motor does not look expensive, and Märklin seem to have it. But the PCB (board for the motor and deco + board for the roof electonics) show no availability with Märklin.
Decoder seems fine, as it drives regular DC motor fine, and sounds etc work.
This is not my own mode, I'm trying to fix this for someone else.
Thanks guys!

Hi!
The C-Sine motor is a brushless DC motor, so there cannot be problems with brushes or the collector. But theoretically there can be problems inside the motor.
The decoder does not drive the motor, so there should be very little load on the decoder output for the motor.
I think I'd search for a gear problem first. Maybe a bent spring for ground contact or another metal part that is out of place. |

Tom, the motor drive board can't malfunction?

A small push will not turn the motor and will not turn the wormdrive and will not affect the driver board except for some small vibrations. So yes, maybe there is a problem with the PCB. Maybe turning the wheels a little bit makes the difference. Or something completely different. |

Thanks for the thoughts guys.
I acrually noticed that the short does not go all the way to the decoder as lights and sounds still function while it happens.
I’ll suggest to the owner a replacement of the pcb and/or the motor.
