I always look for a way to mix analogue and digital trains as I want to run both systems on a section of shared track. I plan to have X2 circuits, analogue and digital, but then, I want the analogue and digital trains to share some sections of tracks. One (simplified) idea is to have crossing like #5211 and then isolate the 4 connectors any analogue loco will not interfere with the digital circuit and vise versa. If the slider is too short then the first wagon can be equipped with a slider of its own that is wired to the engines.

Yesterday I met my boss who plays with the 87:1 models and now builds his OO layout. We talked about the analogue/digital issue and he suggested using 'frogs' (https://railsofsheffield.com/products/gaugemaster-dcc80-dcc-autofrog?_pos=23&_sid=395d8519c&_ss=r). His train of thought is that the frog will sense which type of train, analogue or digital approach and then will connect the shared isolated section to the correct circuitry.

What do you think? Can any of the two work?

Thanks

Ben

I might be wrong but I believe what you are describing is used to prevent a short with a two rail system that has a reverse loop. I first played with a two rail dcc layout and found there was an electronic switch which would automatically sense a potential short and reverse the polarity. Not sure how that would work with a three rail system and switching between analogue and digital.

Never heard about frog on the layout!

However i do not recommend mix analog and digital power on the same tracks!
Digital do have own power feeder that must not mix with analog power feeder output!!!

Digital locomotives offer possible by use it on the digital layout and analog layout.
Analog locomotives runs at highest speed on the digital layout without decoder onboard locomotive which are waste of time.

Digital and analogue engines will never be on the same track at the same time. When an analogue engine will be present the track will be fed from an analogue source and when a digital loco, it will be fed by a digital source.
