What type of fuel is used in the tender less tank locomotives that run on the European railroads?

If you mean small Loco's, some used steam pumped into their boiler storage tank from a steam generating plant at the freight yards. If you mean larger tank Loco's like the br 81, 89, 85, 61, or 66, they have small coal tenders behind the driver cabs.

Oil was also used on several locomotives, eg the prototype for the Märklin 39097

some curiosities have also been built like the Turf /peat fired CIÉ No. CC1. (other turf-fired tank locomotives were also built in Ireland)

and you also have the SBB E 3/3 electric-steam locomotive

Marklin have also done Bavarian? peat fired locos e.g. 3797, but they are all tender locos, not tank locos.

Those are very nice locomotives, have one of the peat versions myself.

On a German museum tank locomotive, they have experimented with pellets.
