Cannot turn the sound off on my Marklin UP ALCO PA 37610 (from year about 2000)

Would appreciate guidance on what I can do to control the motor sound on F1. This Marklin 37610 UP ALCO PA uses a 6090 decoder with 4 functions. I cannot turn the motor sound off with F1 now. It has: F1 - motor sounds. F2 - bell sound. F3 - horn sound. It is basically a 6090 decoder with a sound decoder mounted on it.
I can only turn the sound off by turning the plastic dial to off position with a screw driver on the sound circuit board.
When sound is on-After 4 or 5 minutes the engine sound becomes unbearable and I turn the sound off on the plastic dial. Right now I just leave the sound turned off on the dial. I do not want to change the decoder.
Is there some kind of a decoder I can use that can let power through on or off to one of the speaker wires. The idea is to cut 1 of the speaker wires and instead of manually connecting the wire together for sound to come on, and disconnect the wire for no sound to the speaker, and being about to do it though a decoder (remote) without removing the loco shell. Thanks.

Which controller do you use?
AIUI it's a feature that sound is always on when running with a Delta Control. But F1 should turn it off when using a 6021 controller. |

Hi Bill I had a similar problem with a Märklin big boy 37990 made in 2000. In my case, it turned out that the loco was working fine with a normal MM2 signal but with a multiprotocol signal (DCC, MFX, MM2 in my case) the loco was (and still is) doing strange noises Cheers Jean |

Thanks for your help. I use the 6021 controller, and F1 used to work properly before, but not now. When F1 was pressedbefore, and the light on the F1 on the 6021 was lit, the motor sounds would come on. Then press F1 again, and the light for F1 on 6021 would go off, and the motor sound would stop. So, it was working properly before. I have other ALCOs and the F1 sounds work properly. Any further suggestions will be great appreciated on what type of wiring change I can do. Thanks in advance.

Unfortunately I believe Goofy is correct with this assertion. Either the sound chip or the decoder chip has developed a fault leaving that sound channel producing sound.

Try to run it with a transformer and see/hear what happens. |

Martin/60904 - Connected to the power supply transformer, the lok shoots out quickly, not able to hear, before I have to shut the power.
Problem corrected. Purchased on eBay a used ALCO PA for USD approx. $90.00. I estimated the decoder+sound decoder is worth at least USD60.00 and the motor parts at least USD30.00. So it was a good purchase. Replaced with this decoder, works fine now.

Update 2-6-2025. I have been thinking about this project for a while, and I think I have a solution, and I did not want to waste the sound decoder in this UP ALCO lok. Plan is to unsolder the blue and green wire to the motor. Connect another simple decoder and use the red and brown wire and solder to the lok ground and power. Then solder the green and blue wire from this decoder to the motor, and give it a different address. Now I have 2 addresses for this lok, one to run the motor and lok, the other just for the sounds. I have not done this yet, but it should work I hope.
