Hi, I have Marklin 37348 Srie Re4/4 II als Re 420. The decoder is no loner functioning, and I am looking for a new one.
The manual says part 242 661, which is no longer available on the Marklin website
Is the best option to replace with 60996 SoundDecoder mSD3 PluX22, and to then reprogram?

Thanks in advance, Lionel.

Hello Lionel, are you absolutely sure the decoder is at fault. Is there any life in the loco or totally dead? if you have one use a test light to determine if the decoder is getting power before you embark on buying a new decoder please.

Thanks Dave, the decoder does not respond with a CS3, so I will check that it is getting power. Lionel

The 37348 was the version of the LION Re 420 in the standard SBB red livery. The last Re 4/4II with the OEM ESU Lokpilot was the 37342 Set and the 37356 "Porrentruy". Since then, all locomotives have Maerklin's own decoder.
I do not know if they are using the same pin alignment as the ESU norm, so I am not sure you can safely install a Lokpilot. I would send an email to service(at)maerklin.de and ask them for their assistance.
It is quite likely that they have generic decoders for service and might be able to program one for you.
Do you have an analog transformer that you can test the model with? If not, you can connect wires from a 9V battery to the slider and to the axles.
Just to be sure, open the locomotive and make sure that the jumper between catenary and rail operation is properly seated in the correct position.

According to the Maerklin.de website, the part for the decoder is 260079
The instructions for the 37347 gave the decoder as 198898 but the website (parts) gives 260079 as well.

Regards

Have you checked if the pick up shoe are fit correct by snap on it?
Try to put locomotive on the programming track and read out decoder.
What adress does it stand?
In the manual it says adress 44 with the MM.
If there is no respons then in case you must check if the wires inside of the loco are not broken.

Thanks, I have checked the loco, and it does run with wires on the motor, so the decoder is fried.
I inquired to marklin and they will provide a new 260079 decoder and programmed, so thanks for all the responses, Lionel.

Connecting wires to the motor or any other parts connected to the decoder outputs is a sure way to guarantee that your decoder is dead. It is for that reason that I recommended testing by providing DC power to the slider and to an axle.
Did you check the jumpers for the catenary?
I am glad that Maerklin will be sending you a replacement decoder.

Regards

Certainly not, since your loco has a MTC21 connector. Probably it is the version for reinforced Aux3/Aux4, since the logical Aux make no sense except for Sinus - but I do not know with certitude. So a 60975/76/77 would be a good choice, you would have to program it with the sound project. (I never know which is the one with the steam sound, the one with the diesel sound, the one with electric sound - at the base they are equal, juste the pre-programming is different between 60975/76/77)

You mean, if ESU follows the Märklin norm for Märklin-Trix-Connector 21 (mtc21)? BigGrin Oh, they do. The only point to watch is if you need a NEM 660 version or a MKL version.

I agree. Except if the decoder was deposed before wiring the motor... but even then I personnally would prefer using a Trix plug for analogical locomotives in the mtc connector, and power the slider and axle. zeker is zeker, as said my belgian neighbour, better do it safely.
