What do you do with your already installed Märklin lighting in coaches?

All my Märklin coaches that do not have decoder to control the lighting just turn on when my layout is on and I do not like it.

I have installed some ESU light trip with decoder in coaches that did not have any lighting and love to be able to turn them on as I wish.

What are my option?

1) Install a decoder and if yes which one?
2) Change all my lighting with light strip that have a decoder?
3) Any other suggestions?

Thanks for helping my query if possible

I installed LED light strips in my coaches (the LED's you buy on a reel), with a cap and a diode bridge
Fitted current conducting close couplers on them and on my lok's,
and fitted a small relay in the lok's triggered via aux1 on the lok decoder

All lights in the consist are on or off depending "F1"

Jean-Pierre

Nice solution Jean-Pierre, elegant and straight forward.

I have almost all Märklin and mostly HO, although I do have a small number of Z gauge trains!
So many trains and so little time.

Yes nice solution although a bit above my skill level for now but will look into it. I must say I am a bit reluctant to do something wrong inside my locomotive and fry the board.

My coach already have the Marklin pre installed lighting in them could I do the same.

I am also interested in being able to control each coaches individually if possible. It is fun to turnn on a train with lights coming on at different interval, even better when different compartment can be lit individually but not possible unless I change all the lighting.

ESU. Do lighting strips with decoders which should do all you want. You can light parts or all of a coach and flicker free without CC couplers.q
Take care I like Marklin and will defend the worlds greatest model rail manufacturer.

For me, just having a function decoder to turn the lights off and on is not very exciting. It is not difficult to do if you use current conducting couplers and power the entire consist from one particular coach. Installing a decoder in each individual coach is costly.
The concept of having certain models where you can have separate lights in the corridor and washrooms and pick and choose compartment or berth lights for sleepers or couchettes is interesting. Roco's new Nightjet promises to have interesting options. The average light strip, be it bulbs or LEDs does not offer the options for corridor, vestibule and other lighting that would improve the appearance. I have to take a look at the ESU strips discussed by David.

Thanks for the reply David but I already went that route with ESU, I am looking at a solution with already existing Marklin lighting that do not have a decoder to them.

Here is one I did from scratch with ESU:

I guess basically I am looking for a decoder I can add to control the already installed Marklin lights

Hi
It is all a matter of personnal choice and financial capability.
E.g.: I have a blue Rheinpfeil car consist with microprocessor and sound (fett brennt!) with even an orange LED to simulate a kitchen fire. Nice and dandy BUT I activate these fonctions very rarely.
I have 26 locos simultaneously on my layout with an average of 16 fonctions per loco (some have more, some have less) and there is no way to play with all these fonctions unless with a software like Rocrail to stop smoking in the hidden places, to actvate whistle only when maneuvering / changing directions.

So I think on good compromise for me is to use a strip of warm white LEDs with SMD rectifier bridge and dimming resistor, power is fed through current-conducting couplers and a fonction decoder like the ESU LokPilot 5 FX micro and a slider in a baggage car where hiding the decoder is easier.
Cheers
Jean

.

Thanks for your answer

My layout for now is still in the planning stage and far from what I have seen of yours. I like to thinker and gadgets so for now I have fun programming sound and light sequence.

The ESU LokPilot 5 FX micro you mentioned seems to be a good choice for what I am after. I will try what I can do with it.

That is certainly a good starting point. However a Marklin mld/3 decoder can also be used as an fx decoder, and the motor connections become available as additional function outputs. If you want sound for some reason then an msd/3 can also be used like this.

Thank you I will have a look at that option too. I have a ESU programmer already but I am sure a Marklin programmer will be of some use in the futur anyway so might as well invest too.
