All,

I'm looking permanently install a 60116 digital controller onto a layout and I have questions about the true electrical requirements of the unit.

My intent is to use a DIN rail mounted, regulated, switched mode (SMR) power supply. Commercial options are available in 12, 15, & 24VDC formats with up to 2.5A current supplied.

The 60116's stock power supply provides 2A current at 18VDC.

I can meet this using a 24V power supply and then using a voltage regulator to drop the input to the 60116 from 24V to 18V.

Out of curiosity, I elected to open the 60116 unit and inspect it's power handling on the PCB. What I found was that it routed the input through an LM7805 voltage regulator, which output 5VDC. At a glance, I should be able to use any SMR power supply that can output between >5VDC and <= 18VDC.

I'm concerned that the unit may possible shunt 18V to the mini DIN-10 connectors to power the Mobile Station units that would be plugged in. I've been unable to verify completely where the PCB traces connect to since many paths are obscured by large components mounted on the board.

Am I on track here? Has anyone successfully used a lower voltage power supply with the 60116 unit?

Thanks,

Hi Stephen
Regarding the 60116 as on other Märklin digital items (CS3, CS3+, CS2) the power supply is in charge of voltage regulation and supposed to have more lienient current protection.
The idea is that when a short is detected the electrical unit (60116) in your case) detects it before the PSU feeding the 60116 shuts everything down.
In the 60116 case, this is not a problem as booting up is very quick.

Voltage regulation: Märklin has trimmed its digital HO locos for a 18V DC power feed that is then digitally hashed.
This means that if the power regulation is not so good then ALL locos will have their speed impacted. Seems strange but even the SDS (SoftDriveSinus) locos do.
The maximum feed voltage for CS3 is 22 VDC and it is likely the case for 60116 too.

What happens if you feed the 60116 with 16 VDC? Probably nothing as you need to adjust the maximum speed of each loco. Even to solenoid-operated things will need more time to switch (150 mS instead of the typical 100 mS?)
Here is my 60116.

Here is my 60215 which was fed initially by a 16 VAC transformer and then by a switched / regulaed PSU.

Nice talking to you.

I've read that others use non Marklin smps for the CS 3. Being in Huntsville, you may be well versed in electronic devices etc. given it's heritage in aerospace and related tech. The city where many people are from other states. One negative thing you did by opening up yours is void the warranty though, if still covered by it. My layout is a 4x8 horseshoe double track with a 4 ft. Bridge connection to a 4x6 addition. No problem with the Marklin power supply. Two M 83 decoders, S 88s, 6 turnouts, digital signals and no booster. All lighting and motorized accessories are on other transformers, except for my ski lift which is digital and feeds from the track power.
