Is there any best practice for naming Addressed in a layout, say for turnouts, signals, locos, etc |

How do you mean? In the article edit mode menu, the addresses are shown. The address is automatically chosen by the CS3 according to availability and the factory assigned address unless you manually install it on the controller or an MS2. You can select wether to use mm or DCC when installing the 76xxx series digital signals and accessory decoders. DCC provides more possible addresses. I have made a written log of the addresses for my M83 turnout decoders.

I have made a written log of the addresses for my M83 turnout decoders. Before one installs a decoder for a turnout or signal on the layout, the user is expected to change/set a unique address by adjusting the DIP switches, so that the CS can identify the particular turnout or signal and pass the command to it. So, I was asking if modelers had any best practice for assigning lets say addresses in 100s for Turnouts or 500s for signals, etc. |

Yes, set the dip switch for dcc then.

Hi I think I see your point. Have never seen such system anywhere but It is a good idea to set up one for yourself. First 100 adresses for locos, 101-200 for turnouts and so on. Make a list with names and corresponding adress. Like T1(turnout 1) adress 101 etc. also make a layoutdrawing and enter item names for future reference.
if locos have mfx dekoders they will chose the adresses automatickly. I do not know if this will interfere with the system you chose for dcc adresses. Probably best to set up the dcc items first… Regards Thor

The only interferance will be if any adresses are duplucates in mfx or dcc. Then just change the dcc address later on the Loco.

I number switches sequentially starting at some central point and even if they are mfx, set the dip switches to match. Just a way to easily remember and a safety feature. If for some reason you have to control the layout with an MS it is easier to remember the addresses.

So you can use 1 to 100 for locos and also use 1 to 100 for accessories. Theoretically MM addresses do not interfere with DCC addresses as long as decoders only support a single protocol. Since most decoders are multi-protocol nowadays, I reserve loco addresses 1 to 255 for the MM protocol and use addresses above 255 for DCC locos. |

Yes Tom, as I also have thought. However, a month ago while running my Roco 3rail DCC br 218 with Zimo sound decoder simultaneously with my 37780 ice3, both were responding to commands together. I changed the Roco address from 03 to 04.

To make this work, you have to disable MM in the Zimo decoder. By default, the Zimo decoder responds to MM and DCC and therefore reacts to commands intended for the ICE 3. This problem does not exist if all DCC adresses are greater than 255. |

I didn't know that Zimo decoders have mm protocol. They have railcom though, yes? How could you disable it?
