Greetings. I bought this loco on eBay because the description said Marklin mint so I thought it would run on m track.
It derails constantly. Has very poor traction even with New rings. Any suggestions before I put it back on eBay cheap? Thanks. Holger.

Holger, Roco #43457 suggests its a 2 rail DC analog model from Roco. I suggest its been heavily modified. Is it possible for a clear picture of the underside please?

Its not the easiest way to see what has been done with the loco, if there had been any alteration, if it is a DC loco the bogie would have been changed to be able to add a slider, the slider itself doesn't sit in the right position, also the type of slider was used in early Roco locos but changed them to a silent slider later on., the slider itself should go right down and if it doesn't this would explain your constant derailments., make sure the slider has the correct length and if not change it with a silent slider.,
its up to you if you want to put it back on eBay, I personally think it is repairable., DC locos do run on M, K or C tracks with exceptions.

From what I can tell, the box is originally from a 43457.4 from 1988-1990. According to HFKern, that was a DC model.
The locomotive may have been converted or you might have gotten an AC model in a DC box. The loco number corresponds to the 43457, but I cannot find any mention of a factory AC version of that model. The 69953 (2003) was a Playtime model. That one had a different loco number and was delivered with the silent slider (Flusterschleifer)

If somebody converted the model from DC to AC, they may not have adjusted the spacing of the wheelsets.
You may be able to fix this by ordering the wheelsets for one of the AC versions.

I can't tell the problem from the photo you provided.

If you are close to Summerland, take the model to Eurorailhobbies and let Walter take a look at it.

Things to check:

1) Are the bogies freely rotating?
2) Is there anything that is interfering with the movement?

If there is, for example, a cable snagged between the chassis and the shell, it could prevent one of the bogies from properly pivoting?

Does it derail anywhere or only on certain tracks?

Yes that was the listing link. Both sets of bogies pivot freely. It runs fine until a turnout where it derails. It seems like the lip on the wheels isn't enough. Or the plastic trucks keep the wheels from full contact. Thanks for all the tips. Holger

I am guessing that the wheelsets are still the original DC ones or do not correspond to Maerklin norms for wheel spacing
Ask Walter at ERH if he can get the correct wheelsets for you.

Holger it is going to be a mission to get that loco to run perfectly. To me apart from having incorrect wheels / spacing the "Marklin" slider is too long & extends beyond the leading wheel set. That in itself will cause derailments on points etc. I think it best to put it back on the market & be done with it "Too hard basket". If your set on having a Roco BR290 Diesel loco I suggest you look at this model: Roco Spur H0 69953 Diesellokomotive BR 290 193-2 der DB Digital. This is the ROCO HO/AC version of your loco. Note the position of the Roco silent slider:

This is just my point of view & as the other guys have suggested it is possible with a lot of mucking around to get working as you would have expected when you bought it. Good luck.

After river suggested the pickup slider is contributing to the problem I made some adjustments to the slider but I agree with Dave Banks the slider is too long. I don't feel comfortable putting it up for sale and gifting someone else the problem. I will keep tweaking and likely just use it for shunting. Thanks all for the tips.

Marklin #7175 looks to be the shortest of the older sliders with the hole. Looks like the length is 4.2cm. Please measure yours with a Vernier Caliper & let is know the length of your one. I think yours looks longer to me.
That might help the issue & not expensive for an experiment.
