I've played with Railly and created some reversing loops, using the Marklin catalogs and handouts to create them and mess about with ideas.

This said, I've noticed that they don't appear a lot in layouts that I've seen displayed here and the samples that Marklin puts in the books. Is there a reason for this? Is there something that just makes them "not worth the trouble?

Hi

If you want a reversing loop, you always want to have two of them, otherwise you will only be able to get your trains turned around once, and after that they all will travel the same way. (If you don't do a lot of reversing.)

And they take up space, and space is something that a modell railroader can't get enough of. Smile

I have done a couple of layouts with reversing loops, and often you get one of them in but then the other is a lot harder. You still want it to look good.

It also depends on if you want to have many levels in your layout.

If you click the link below in my message you will end up at my homepage. There I have made a small layout with reversing loops in both directions. If it's good or not, well that is you to the viewer to decide.

I will buy Märklin 4644 BP tankerwagons that have the original box and are in good condition. (No broken details)

I like the layout that you show. It looks a lot better than any of the reverse-loop layouts that I had designed. I believe that you have hit the nail on the head about requiring a lot of space. The ones that I had created just didn't seem to make a "story" for me. They seemed to be just stuck in there taking up space and making the layout cumbersome. I remember seeing a reverse loop in one of the "booklets" that used a bunch of switches that allowed you to reverse in both directions by backing and switching in a triangular pattern. But, even though that was compact, I couldn't imagine how getting to the switch would be compact.

Thanks!

Found the compact cross over; but, like I said, getting to and from it would be weird I think.

It is 24611 switches connected with 24230 and 24206 pieces...

I have one reversing loop as part of my layout but it is such an integrated part of the layout that it can be approached by trains running in any direction. In fact it is only an extra connection between the inner track (east vs. westbound) where they are close together.

Reversing loops are so practical and easy to do in the Märklin world, that I have included a lot of them into my layout;

Hi!

Here's a layout with two reversing loops inside (depends how you set the switches):

You can also make reversing loops with 24672/2, two pieces 24230 and several 24130.

Tom

Thanks to the stitching function of Photoshop Elements I can offer you this pic of the right side of my layout. The reversing loop is from the center of the pic to the right.
As you can imagine from the switches on the left, it is possible to access this loop in any way.

I see, the 360 degree circle with two entrances makes it seem a little better with the crossovers between the straight sections approaching it. Nice idea. I knew I was creatively blocked...
