Am I right in thinking that whenever you get a new loco, you have to take all the others off before you can register the new one on the system?
If so, that's a bit of a faff.
I ask because I received a new loco today (one I've been wanting ever since I switched to HO). Put it on the track, did the business, went to move the loco and everything else moved as well! Oh my..... LOL
So I took everything off and one by one re-registered them all again.
And what about re-numbering them?
If they all (mostly) come as address 3 (but I can't see the address on the MS2 - or does giving the loco a name change the address?) then everytime a new loco is installed surely it would overwrite the previous '3'.

Use the secondary (=programming) track for registration and changes of locs. Just a short track segment with separate power wiring from controller. Or even use old 6021 for MM only (not mfx). |

Ben. I don't have any other power supply except that which came with the MS2. So to have a programming track, I'd need another (different) power supply?

Hi Dave,
What is the catalogue number of your mobile station? It will be on the underside.
There could be quite a simple work around. Under your set up I am assuming that you have a box connected to your track, your power supply and MS plug into that. If that is case I think you could have a second track box on a totally separate piece of track to use as your programming track. When you want to use it you unplug your power supply and MS from your layout plug them into your programming track box to do the needful and then reverse when you want to go back to your mainline.
It will be a lot easier than taking everything off the layout!
I might just have one in my spares box I’ll check

I'll have a look for the catalogue number in the morning Adrian. Thanks very much.

Got it. See Adrian's solution about a separate track for registering instead of using main track. Just reconnect when done, as ms2 remembers. |

It isn't a big inconvenience to take one or two locos off to boot a new one.

Confused.com No you don't with MFX, on the contrary. Best is to have the new loco on the program track while the others are on the layout AND remove any Internet connectionwith the CS (Ethernet traffic load will disrupt the registration process). Why is it best to have all other locos on line? Because there is a risk (it happened to me many times) that the CS3 will re-use the MFX number of one of your absent locos so forcing later a new address change of the absent loco (because two have the same MFX address. With other protocols (MM2 or DCC), the situation is simple: YOU ARE IN CHARGE of the address AND only ONE loco must be on the programming track for address changes. Simply, the CS will warn you that the address is already used (number displayed in red + warning message) Cheers Jean |

It is possible to add a two-position switch so the MS2 powers either the layout or just the programming track. Then all locos can be left on the main track while programming affects the programming track only. |

Would I just need a switch on the positive (centre rail) wires, thereby leaving the return (rails) coupled to both layout and program track?

You could also use Märklin plugs to switch which wires go from the box to which track. Faster to set up, but to be hones, installing a switch would be the best option.
