I recently purchased a Marklin 3184 Serie Am 4/4 and the decoder does not work. What would be a suitable (MFX) replacement?IMG_0273.jpg I have a CS3+ system.

Hi,

This is originally an analogue loco so it has been retrofitted later on.

If you want to have sounds then I’d recomend Märklin mSD3 or ESU Loksound 5.

If you don’t want sound, then Märklin mLD3 or ESU Lokpilot.

If you can open the loco and post a few phots of it, then you can get more detailed recomendations. 👍

Here's the exterior and both side of the interior. I'm Guessing that I'm going to need a motor replacement also.

this locomotive has been updated with a 5 pole motor, and to obtain mfx I will recommend a 60972 decoder if you don't want sound and a 60986 decoder if you want diesel sound.

Best regards

If the motor works fine you don't need a new one, only a decoder like einotuominen suggested. (the motor was upgraded when the decoder was installed)
I also suggest that you consider using the Märlin 276770 Lamp socket adapter in lap sockets and e610080 bulbs. (eliminates flikering)

Your sure the decoder does not work?
The decoder has dip switches, your CS3+ will not automatically find the lok when putting it on the track...

As others said, the motor has already been upgraded.

BUT before rushing out and buying a new decoder it would be worth checking the motor - it may just need a clean, oil and/or new brushes. After doing that desolder one of the wires off the brush holder and use a 9V battery or similar DC source to see if the motor runs before trashing the decoder.

The decoder fitted is from the c90 family, which were available as an upgrade kit. It has the two potentiometers visible through the hole in the back plate. One sets the top speed and the other sets the momentum (acc/deceleration) rate.

Indeed. Are you certain that you are commanding the loco with the correct address?

In addition, the dip switches may have become oxidised. Flipping each back and forth may help.
