Blue: old Märklin. Yellow: old Primex (Primex is Märklin for department stores). White: new Märklin.
Note that there are different plugs (old, new, start-up). |

Hi Dean,
The first thing you should do is look at the plugs you have. As Tom points out there are now 2 different types, I believe M had to change the design after some EU directive. The thing is though they are not compatible so the plugs you have will dictate which version of the control box you need.
If you find you have a mix let me know and we can sort out so you have all the same type.
Kind regards Adrian

Also be aware that each version has variations with different coloured buttons.
The blue and yellow ones are effectively the same, and can be mixed and matched.
But for point control you want the ones with red and green buttons. There are other variations with red and yellow buttons, and green and yellow buttons. You don't want either of those for point control, their internal configuration is different.

Thank you so much for the reply I don't have any point motors at present but I'm about to buy some and need a control box. I know I can use decoders but that's expensive. I see on eBay there is a 72720 box would that work?
Thanks in advance

Märklin did it voluntarily without legal directives. They did it either to burn some money or to avoid the "14+" marking on the boxes. A few years later they came up with special plugs for the start-up line, rendering the small plugs for the adult line pointless. And so there are now three types of plugs. |

you can also buy just the plugs, either the old (from Ebay) or new versions (from Dealer or Ebay).

I´m a little confused as to what 3rd type of plugs you refer to. I know of the classic banana plugs, and the newer ones -almost identical- but with two "lips" partly covering the conector, so that you cant connect to the older type of controllers and plugs. What is the 3rd type? |
