Morning. - a basic question I expect, but in HO with two tracks running side by side, is there a recommended distance between the rails, outside rail to outside rail?

Thanks

Hi!
There are NEM specifications for the distance - measured centre to centre, so result is the same.

Surprise, surprise: smaller radii require greater distances and longer coaches require greater distances.

Which radii are you going to use? Which types of rolling stock will you run?

The 77 mm used by the Märklin C track system are on the safe side for R1. It is 64 mm for R3 and larger.
Depending on radius and rolling stock, smaller distances could be sufficient.
Regards
Tom

R1 and R2 mostly. yes I can understand smaller radii needing bigger distance !

Thanks for that info, very useful. I have also just found a specification sheet online.

Cheers

That 77mm distance is for the 1:93,5 wagons to be able to negotiate parallel R1/R2 curves. It looks far too wide.
Prototypcal distance is 4,7m. (54mm in H0) -or even as low as 3,8m for newer DB tracks.
The K-track system use 57mm for the slim switches, which looks very nice. (R9 curves)

It surely is far too wide, but the radii are far too small.
In my experience, even coaches in 1:87 (316 mm) can safely be used with 77 mm spacing and R2/R3.

Smaller distances can be used with either larger radii or shorter rolling stock.
