In 2019 we drove back home across Australia via 'Australia's Longest Shortcut', but turned right down the Oodnadatta Track.

It once was a railway line. A few photos from the area of our road trip. We also did the trip in 2005 by train, but to be honest it is infinitely better by car as you can stop anyway you want & take your time. Most of the train trip is at night so you don't see anything.

The sort of distance we are talking of. This mileage sign is from the turnoff south from Uluru onto the highway to South Australia.

Lamberts Centre, the very centre of Australia, a bit (a few hundred km) north of the top end of Oodnadatta Track.

The 2005 train trip, one bed would have been more enjoyable (technicalities I will leave at that!)

The Ghan Railway line was moved west years ago due to flooding (not to forget white ants eating sleepers quicker than they could be laid!). Last year due to flooding people were flown out by helicopters & some died.

One of the few remaining Artesian Basin Springs (1,700,000 sq km, about 22% area of Australia) before it was sucked dry.

Not actually on the railway line, but indicative of the area.

Also a bit off the Track. Lake Eyre North 15 metres below sea level (we walked out about 2km onto the lake, not allowed, I can see very easily why people get lost, as you have no reference point).

Back on the Oodnadatta Track, one of the old water tanks for the steam locomotives of the era.

Cost of water, don't waste it!

(If you are interested doing the Oodnadatta Track & or Australia's Longest Shortcut 2700km or part of, PM me a message)
