That is a condensing tender, developed by Germany during the second world war for use on tracks where water supply was scarce.

The loco needed a number of modifications to use this tender with a lot of piping to collect the steam that exhausts from the cylinders, pipe it back to the tender where it is condensed back to water, and then reused. After the war a number of tenders were sold to South Africa for use on locos taking trains into the Veld as water supplies are scarce there too.

Marklin has modelled this tender a number of times on Br50 or Br52 and Br53 locos.

thanks kiwialan never seen anything like this in the uk i picked up a BR 50 with a brake tender and a 33 with oil tink i might have to get this one however I'm after a bathtub
