Got the new 39771 E 71 loco. Shortly after the factory loco pic was gone and replaced by a steam loco pic. Reset decoder to no avail. What can I do?

The CS2 and CS3 automatically select the loco pic based on a highly complicated AI algorithm. For my Hectorrail TRAXX loco it uses the image of a French steamer.
You can select the image manually to override the automatic selection.

I thought the AI algorithm was creating a virtual image of the locomotive in 3D, but now I understand it is only intelligent selection!

Update you CS3 and see if the E71 appears with the correct icon in the loco icon menu. If so, just change it in the edit Loco's set-up menu. If not, you can use one of a different color if there is one, or upload an image photo from the web. Refer to the big CS3 book, and youtube videos about how.

You don't indicate which controller you have. If it is a CS3 you can go to edit loco, call up the loco, click on the picture and then either enter the Marklin loco number or if that brings up a different loco try entering the loco engine description. Sometimes a list of locos will come up and you have to select the appropriate one. As a last resort you can download the picture from a web site, the Marklin one works, and load it into the GUI.

There is no E71 in CS3 lok database, and I thought the lok icon is stored in the decoder ex factory as CS3 lok database gets updated when this is a new patch. That leads me to believe a decoder refresh is necessary.

You still fail to indicate what controller you have. My understanding is that the photos are in the CS GUI file and not in the lok decoder. That is where you save any non Marklin lok photos. Have you recently updated the CS? The most recent update inserted new GUI photos and perhaps the E71 is in it. Or you can download it from the Marklin site.

The loco icon is not stored in the decoder. Not even the name of the icon is stored in the decoder.
Only the name of the loco is stored in the decoder - and that name is used to select the icon based on string comparison and AI.

I have CS3 and CS3+. Both have the latest software version. On CS3 the proper lok icon was loaded, but I got a steam lok icon on CS3+. I saved a backup of CS3 and restored on CS3+, it shows ??? on the icon.

Is the CS3 slaved to the CS3+? But on the CS3+ got into the edit loco function. Click on the lok to get it into the edit feature. Click on the picture - the question marks - and enter the Marklin number in the dialogue box. I would also check to see if both the CS3 and the CS3+ have the current updates - 2.4.1(0).
I just tried it on my CS3+ and the picture came right up.

On Märklin site I don't see version 2.4.1(0). Mine is 2.4.0(5). Am I missing something here?

By the way, as both my CS3 and CS3+ use same software version and they are not linked, then why would lok icon show on CS3 but not on CS3+?

No, the loco icon is stored in the cs, and the cs selects the icon based on one of the fields read from the loco during registration.

I would suggest you delete the loco from the cs, and allow it to reregister.

In order to update a CS3 has to be connected to the internet and then you have to tell it to download the update. Apparently the web site has not been updated with the new download. It has only been available for a couple of days. Is it possible the CS3 has an ethernet cable connecting it to your server but the CS3+ does not? Do you have two completely separate layouts? Well I lied to you at the beginning. It is also possible to update the CS3's by downloading the files from the Marklin site onto a thumbdrive and then using that to update the CS3's.

I am under the impression that the field used to select the icon is the catalogue number of the loco that is stored in the decoder. When you go digging through the files of the cs2 or cs3 many of the icons use the catalogue number as the icon file name.

I suspect any "AI" only confuses the issue, maybe AI stands for Anything Inhere and that is why he has the wrong icon showing.

I don't know.
The name of the loco is surely considered - and my TRAXX "241 002" gets the icon of a French 4-8-2 steamer.

But I only have the CS2 and the AI may work somewhat different. But at club meetings, the CS3 also creates funny icon assignments.

The lok file is searchable for whatever is included in the description. That includes the Marklin number, the engine type and even the running number. Pretty much everything that is in the short description Marklin uses to identify the lok.

I did that to no avail.

As an update, both CS3 and CS3+ updated to 2.4.1(0). E71 lok icon is now properly shown. File closed.
