Good Evening Everyone
I have just started building my first HO Marklin layout and I'm using C track my question is how high should the platforms be? And how wide? I normally build my own out of wood as kits for long platforms can be expensive.
Thanks in advance Dean

Relative to height, I like it at chest height. Using this criteria, the real height depends how tall you are and if you operate seated or standing up.

Which era? In Germany there are four standard heights and 76 cm is the new standard for ICE and other trains. Old platforms are rather 38 cm or maybe 55 cm. For S-Bahn there can be 96 cm platforms. Height measured above top of the rail. On a model railroad, lower platforms are less likely to interfere with running trains. As to width, DB regulations require at least 250 cm for single-sided platforms and 340 cm for double-sided platforms. The 77 mm spacing of C track comes close to this minimum width. |

Hi Dean, This is a question I that asked in the past and, as HO has pointed out, the answer is complex. In the end I went for home-made wooden platforms at a finished height of 17.5 mm above the baseboard for a 70's small branch line layout. 16mm craft wood base sprayed machinery grey with a top of 1.5 mm balsa wood speckle sprayed with two greys and black then an off-white edging. The balsa wood overhangs the base by 1.5mm all around. Very primitive but cheap and easy. Here is what it looks like if that helps you choose your own height ...
